Lavender Silkie Question

But, if you breed a Lav to a Blue, then you no longer have Lav. So, you have to start breeding for the color again. Do you have a Lav Roo? What color is he? Or do you need a lav roo? She also has a 2 yr old Lav roo for sale. He was her breeder for 2 years. He got into it with another roo, so his crest is a little messed up right now, but I can send you pics of him if you would like them.

She is also fixing to start pairing up her younger lav's and putting them on eggbid, so you might contact her before she list them. Just tell her that Cammy referred you if you don't mind.

She works a full time job and has a full time job with her birds, so just be patient, she will get back to you.

Here's the pair that I got: One is darker and one is lighter.

My darker Lav Cockerel. He has a nice crest starting and a really nice dark comb.

My lighter Lav girl.... She is going to have a huge crest I think. I should have taken a pic of her face from the front. Her crest is much larger than it appears in this pic. She also has a very nice small dark comb.

They have really good toes too! She will pick you a really good pair that I know you would be happy with.

When my Lav Cockerel and Buff x Lavender Showgirl are old enough and I am going to breed for the Porcelain color. I can't hardly wait!

I didn't breed for it, it starting to come out of my Lavender breedings, so all my Lav & Splits could and have given me Porcelains. But now that I have them, I'll be breeding just for them.

Are you showing any porcelains at Delmarva, April? They are gorgeous!

There's a really good discussion about this on the classroom at the Coop.

Most of the discussion is about smooth feathered birds, but it sure is helpful! I have two lav cochin boys with crappy feathers, but I wonder if it doesn't show as prominantly in Silkies because of the nature of their feathers to begin with?

Thanks! I'll go check it out.

Why I asked is apparently the lavender gene is located very close to a gene that stops feather growth, primarily on the shoulders, wingbows and tail. There's a picture of a silkie with this affliction in the book Genetics of Chicken Colours.

The coop discussion, though, states that the affliction only affects males, and the lav gene isn't sex-linked. They are scratching their heads over the phoenomenon as well. They suspect some sort of modifiers that cause bad feathering only on males, and only on hom lav, but not all of them. Crazy complex!

Brody's Broodello :

The standard calls for a steele blue color, the lav gene can & does have different shading. Having said that I would go with the color seen on Bren's birds. But you might want to keep the darer one's for breeding. They could be f1 gen birds and will pass on the color went they breed.

Oh I am using the darker ones as well trying to get my lav color stronger. I love my birds from Bren but want a more uniform richer color that my other lavs have

I am really excited about my chicks so far the oldest is about a month maybe more so only time will tell.

Yes i entered a pair of Porcelains & a pair of Lavenders. My best porcelain pullet won't make it to the shows she has a underturned toe. She was born that way, but man it she could go, her type is spot on. She is starting to lay so as soon as I can she is getting a boyfriend!

Wow that is so interesting, I haven't had this problem in mine at all. It is something to keep an eye out for. Sort of like deaf white cats, etc.

Never, they all feather out like normal silkies. What have you seen?

This is a very common problem with lavender. It is particularly common with males. The Coop has lots of discussion on it. It has nothing to do with silkie feathering--it has to do with lavender.

I assume it's just from a lav x lav breeding? What do you do, just cull the afflicted birds? Breed lav to splits? Does that even avoid the problem? I can search over there later too. Like you said there are lots of discussions on it, I need to start sifting through them.
