I am hoping for some Isabel's. I have a couple of black Orpington colors.
Oooo you'll keep posted on their progress? How was the ratio on hatch? LAV / Black for your 100 eggs was it good
Isabel is Lavender on a Gold base. The Gold is diluted to a really pretty creamy yellow color. The Lavenders you have are Silver base. The ratios are a bit skewed since I have not separated my splits, buffs and lavender hens. My rooster is lavender. I have 7 buff hens, 3 lavender and 4 split patterned hens. Half of the chicks thus far are lavender based, 2 black and the other half are split patterned.
I'm hoping that I will have some isabels. Based on my research, I should. My lavender split hens are patterned, which is used to make isabels.
Still learning.

With your current cross of Lavender x Black Splits you'll get 50% Lavender and 50% Black Splits. These will all be Silver base with a 0% chance of Isabel. To get Isabel you would have needed to keep one of your Black Split males from the original Lavender x Buff cross and then breed him to his sisters. You'd need to hatch out about 5000 chicks from that crossing to get it.
If you want to get Isabel with less hatching you can cross your Lavender over some Gold Laced girls and then cross the offspring together. The offspring will come in a wide variety of colors and you'll get Isabel too (odds are about 1/200, which is WAY better than 1/5000).

Thank you for this. Some of my hens are gold based... They are a cross between buff x lavender, which produced a partridge type split. See my images above. Am I calculating wrong? Some of these lavender chicks have gold tones. Thank you!! Joanne

The Buffs used in the original cross were the females, correct?Thank you for this. Some of my hens are gold based... They are a cross between buff x lavender, which produced a partridge type split. . Thank you so much! We've been struggling with this in this thread for a year! I am wanting to get some crele. Perhaps that will work with what you are referring to as well? JoanneThe Buffs used in the original cross were the females, correct?
So with chickens the males have two "Z" chromosomes (ZZ) and females have 1 "Z" and 1 "W" chromosomes (ZW). The silver/gold base is sex-linked, meaning it only passes on the "Z" chromosome.
Here's the genetics for silver/gold:
Males-
S/S = silver
S/s = golden (silvery yellow)
s/s = gold
Females-
S/- = silver
s/- = gold
If your original cross was Lavender x Buff (always write as sire x dam, never dam x sire) the genetics would look like this:
Lavender (S/S lav/lav) x Buff (s/- LAV/LAV)
Male Offspring-
100% Golden-based Black Split (S/s LAV/lav)
Female Offspring-
100% Silver-based Black Split (S/- LAV/lav)
The golden color that your pullets have is known as "leakage". It's not because they are gold-based, it's basically "holes" in the black pigmentation where the red pigmentation comes through.
Crossing the male and female offspring of this cross will result in
Males-
Black S/S LAV/LAV
Black Split S/S LAV/lav
Lavender S/S lav/lav
Golden S/s LAV/LAV
Black Split S/s LAV/lav
Isabel (sort of) S/s lav/lav
Females-
Black S/- LAV/LAV
Black Split S/- LAV/lav
Lavender S/- lav/lav
Gold s/- LAV/LAV
Black Split s/- LAV/lav
Isabel s/- lav/lav
The next step to fix the Isabel coloration would be to cross both of the Isabel and then cross the best resulting Isabel male over his mother. All of the offspring from that final cross will breed true for Isabel.
As a slight correction to my previous post, you could get Isabel fastest by crossing a Gold Laced or Buff male over a Lavender female and then crossing the offspring (about 1/100).
You're welcome! Crele is Black Breasted Red + Barring. There are "Crele" Orps, but they're actually Partridge + Barring. If you weren't particular about it being 100% accurate (most aren't) then the easiest way to get them would be to buy them from Fancy Chick.. Thank you so much!
