Learning all I can about call ducks !

Pics
Hmmm, guess I didn't see what I thought I did... in a previous pic it looked like her flight feathers on her left wing were blue...

Yep, that's a blue fawn... if male, will look like dad... if female will look just like that, mostly...

Yes, you have a pastel from your first hatch... *I think* your grey duck might be carrying a hidden copy of blue... only explanation I can think of...

Also a blue fawn... blue fawn is the grey pattern with 1 copy of blue added... pastel is the grey pattern with 2 copies of blue added...

That's a blue fawn Call duckling, and believe it is Johnn's pic... check the Call duck thread he posts his pics of Lacey on...
Wow! That is awesome. And complicated! But I think it is super cool that the ducklings don't all look the same. I'm certain I have two boys and a girl now. Their voices changed this week to the raspy sound. so my first hatch is a blue fawn drake,a grey drake, and a pastel girl. How cool is that! I'll have to get a better pic of the grey to show you but he has the blue wing patch.

Now to figure out what to do about keeping two boys and a girl....hum. I can't let give any of them up you know. Think I'll have to separate them? I don't wanna in breed so I won't want to hatch eggs from them. I know i can just gather the eggs but thinking two boys against one girl might not work out too good here in a couple more months :(

Yes, greys will get the blue wing patch, the blue gene in the blue fawns and pastels dilute the wing patch so it is faded instead...

Neat that you can tell their genders now, you *may* not have an issue until spring though, as Calls are seasonal breeders and they'll be maturing later in the year... only time will tell though...

In poultry there really isn't "inbreeding" per se... many line breed their flocks all the time, breeding back to a parent though, rather than siblings together... but breeding siblings together once isn't always a bad thing...

Well I'm sure it happens in the wild lol my concern was just not knowing if duck and Jane were siblings to begin with. Who knows. Especially knowing now that its possible to get the different color types out of the same parents. The guy that give them to me bought them at an auction for 20 bucks so the people probably just wanted rid of them.

Or they just had excess... I send many off to auction when I am overloaded... you've got to hatch lots when you just want to keep/breed the best ones... :)

I had a blue bibbed hatch a clutch the other night during a double storm set that was awful... thought you might like to see... 1 blue bibbed like mama, and 4 pastels...
