Leghorns -19 weeks to first eggs

I really do not understand why an animal attacking me is a non issue. I must just be a silly man. Am I supposed to be man enough to take it? I mean I am and it has yet to hurt me but that will change as it grows older. This bird is a damaged man hater, even though I have raised it from a hatchling.

On the flip side of that I now believe I must be a Mexican, all of my breakfast tacos are labled Mexi for mexicacono because I like a good spicy rotell in them. I never knew I was a Mexican, I have always thought I was a Texan.

Regardless, when I place orders down here for the short order cooks to make my breakfast I keep getting labled as one! I hope Trump doesn't deport me.

Has she been attacked?
Has she seen you being attacked?
That might change her tune, especially the former.
She never see's it happen because like today it was at first lights feeding. We tag team them whoever is awake at dawn feeds them and we barely give it a second thought. However, with this one I am really starting to think I will be imagining the NFL and kicking that extra point soon.

I really don't want it to suffer with a collapsed lung but it is getting to the point ill injure it, set the dogs on it and just not care about the outcome. I really just do not like this bird, but at the same time I do care about it suffering needlessly.

It is horrible to say that about another living being.

She knows I am not full off crud on this. Just we don't supervise each others chicken keeping habits. Like this morning she heard the thud as I attempted to send the bird into orbit via a kick. My wife wasn't curious in the least and I didn't break any toes kicking a wheelbarrow. I guess the fact that I wasn't crying over my broken bones by itself quelled her curiosity about the noise.

So she doesn't get attacked...or doesn't tend the birds??
She never gets attacked. I craigslisted em last night, and they are now off my lawn. It is going to take some time getting used to how quiet everyone is now. Had a raptor try taking one of the girls but it was another miss. I'm sure my gals can take good care of themselves.

The boys spent the night in a large dog kennel on the porch. I should have turned off the porch lights as they partied all night.

QED. Problem solved. Looking at getting replacements Sumatra cockerels or trying another breed?

I will be trying Easter Eggers. I can get a handful from the local feed store. Then this fall, cycle some of the older girls out. I'd like to raise them with the meat birds, but that limits my meat birds. Chicken tractor to raise meaties, then roll over to pullets after 2 months. Numbers undecided. I am worried the leghorns will have issues.

Garden is coming together.

There is a SQ LF breeder up in Tyler Texas who has a young cockerel that she is 99% sure on sex. Longtails is the name of her small operation. So for 125(50 +75shipping) I'm going to give her a go and order it up. She has reported absolutely no need for behavioral culls in her flock as they have always displayed gentle dispositions. Also she reported the comb/wattles as breed to the SOP. I like the idea of a little guy roo starting off lower on the pecking order as well.

Now the wife compromise: I get my bird so she gets to get a donkey. I actually wouldn't mind a donkey for the compost mounds they produce so we can get a garden going in this crappy soil. We used to borrow a neighbors horse for that same reason, but he no longer has it.

Oh after researching Malays I have decided they will not be an appropriate breed for me this coming spring. Even though the hens only get 5-7 pounds or so I've read the hens are broodies and will defend their nest boxes from humans. I'm not looking for more of that, also the roosters come in at near 10 pounds and will defend their hens(from humans) so the breed just seems like too much hassle.

Just a google images search of those roos makes em look quite aggressive.
