Fears are definitely legit - you should ask your family how many of them are afraid of spiders, snakes, dogs, water, crowds, etc?  Most people have a fear of something, although it may not be so bad as to keep them from doing something.  And, yes, it is possible to address the fears and gain control over it.  Hypnotherapy can be very helpful with this, allowing you to address your fear in a safe and comfortable environment.  It should be performed by a trained and certified hypnotherapist (different than the ones who put on shows).  I used to do hypnotherapy and was very successful working on fears - mainly claustrophobia, fear of flying, and even a woman who was agorophobic and hadn't left her home in almost four years (I went to her home to start).  It may take more than one session, but it can definitely work.  And much better, IMO, than the flooding technique.
