I wanted to start guessing the genders of my 6 Ameraucana chicks! I thought it’d be fun to have this thread to track the progress of the chicks as well! I have 5 white Ameraucanas and 1 blue, they’re 3 weeks old tomorrow. Let’s see which ones we think are cockerels vs pullets right now and I’ll update as time goes on! Go ahead and give your guesses as well!

Blue Ameraucana chick, my guess: pullet

White Ameraucana chick, marked lime green, my guess: 50/50 on this one. The comb looks redder in photos than it is in person.

White Ameraucana chick, marked reddish pink (I know you’re not supposed to use reddish colors but no one’s picking on this chick!), my guess: pullet

Are you guessing with your intuition, or is it based on certain criteria?

Very pretty birds. Did you breed them or buy them?
Right now I’m just guessing by their comb sizes. Behavior is really tough right now because they all act the same, except the white Ameraucana marked blue. He runs at my hand, pecks it, watches out for hawks in the sky, etc, so I’m pretty certain he’s a cockerel.

Thank you! I purchased them as eggs from Gypsy Hen poultry! She has some gorgeous Ameraucanas!

I really can't see a single indicator at this point. I'm inclined to just innately concur with your judgement. I stepped on that bear trap once and won't do it again.

CAmountainchicks asking anything of anyone about an ameraucana is like Houdini asking a clown how to do magic. 🤣
Lol! The comb differences I can see right now are easier to differentiate in person! There’s 2 that I can see that have bigger wider combs (blue, & dark green), one that’s 50/50 (light green), and 3 that have combs that are much tinier and flatter (blue Ameraucana, purple & red). Curious to see just how early we can tell with these babies!

Do ameruacanas have the same thing that EEs have where if you see partridge feathering coming in you know they are female?
They don’t since Ameraucanas come in specific colors like white, bbs, lavender, etc. You can tell what wheaten Ameraucanas are when they feather in though since the Wheaten coloring is sexually dimorphic! These Ameraucana babies will all be pure white with the exception of the one blue girl!
