Calling experienced chickeneers:

the 2nd of my 4 wk old Wyandotte chicks is lethargic & not really eating or drinking. I have started treating her for cocci & syringed some egg yolk into her this morning. Only got 2~3 ml into her but I did get some electrolyted water into her as well. Also a couple mls probiotic yoghurt. Anyone with ideas as to what might be going on & what I should be doing? Bedding is changed every day & kept dry. Water kept clean. I was using medicated feed but will change that if I start treating everyone for cocci. Poops are pretty normal.

I usually get POLs so chicks are outside my experience.

Chicks under four weeks, it's often constipation that sends them into a dive. Have they been getting treats yet or just the chick feed? Have they been getting grit? It's a good idea to make chick grit available since chicks can sample things they shouldn't and the grit is a help in grinding this stiff up so it doesn't form a blockage.

It doesn't hurt to treat for coccidiosis. It's a serious matter and the treatment is so simple and safe, no reason not to just got ahead with it.

In addition, to cover all bases, I suggest a teaspoon of coconut oil, slightly chilled to make it easier to get into the beak..If the chick is constipated, you could see a big poop in an hour to eight hours. And if the chick is feeling back to normal, you will know that was the problem.

Just chick feed. No treats. Started grit today. Will try the coconut oil but she doesn't appear constipated. Thank you for your help.
