Help! One of my hens is acting very lethargic. She is all puffed up and she lays wherever you put her. She isn’t eating and seems to be losing weight. It’s the second day of this so I brought her inside and was able to get her to drink a little. I’ve checked her over really well and she isn’t wheezing and she looks overall healthy. I got her as a day old in September so I don’t think she would have an egg stuck in her as she isn’t even laying yet. The only thing that could be weird is that she seems a little squishy in her chest. All of my other chickens are happy and healthy so I don’t know what to do for her! Of course she is my favorite hen too. If anyone could give me some ideas of what to do I would greatly appreciate it!!

She may have a crop disorder. https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...w-to-know-which-one-youre-dealing-with.73607/

The only way to verify a crop disorder is to check the crop after a long night of no access to food and water. If a crop still has fluid and solid material in it before a chicken eats, you can assume a crop issue.

That sounds kind of like a sour crop but she doesn’t seem to smell. She just stood up on her own and pooped and that smells terrible. I read in the article about giving her coconut oil. Would that be the best first choice?

She’s now standing but not looking so hot.

Sour crop doesn't usually smell bad in its early stages. Sour crop makes the crop retain fluids and feel like a water balloon - squishy and liquid feeling.

The other crop disorder, which can have sour crop as a side effect, is impacted crop. This one will feel full and lumpy and hard with maybe a little fluid in it. This one can smell bad.

They are treated differently. You don't treat sour crop with oil and you don't massage it. On the other hand, impacted crop is treated with coconut oil and massage. If the contents have begin to grow yeast, then you would treat for sour crop after you break up the impaction in the crop.

Read the article again carefully, and try to decide which crop disorder you might be dealing with, and we'll go from there.

Yes I read it wrong thank you! I’m going to try the yeast infection cream today and hope that she starts feeling better. Her crop is squishy but small. She feels pretty thin all over and she’s very top heavy. She leans on me or the box to stand up.

Also do I take away her water? She won’t drink on her own anyway. This morning I got her to drink because I thought she must be dehydrated from not drinking yesterday or over night.
