Lethargic Hen

Here is some reading about egg yolk peritonitis in chickens:

Ascites is when fluid collects in the abdomen from either egg yolk peritonitis, but also can happen with heart failure of liver disease. The abdomen may fell tight like a drum, but in hens that I opened after death and found yellow fluid, they were just enlarged, not tight.

I use a natural lice/mite killer recipe that kills lice/mites in 24 hours. I use it on all of my chickens and it works amazing. I spray under the wings and their vents as those seem to be the first places lice/mites turn up. I also add some garlic powder every time I refill my chicken feeders as lice/mites don’t like the taste of garlic. Since she had a large infestation you should make sure to give her foods that are high in iron.

I also use sevin dust in my chickens’ bedding.

In that case ill have to give all my hens that, as they all have mites I'm sure. Will i howe to dust them as well? And what dust powder is best?

Look for a Permethrin based poultry dust or spray. In the UK it may be "louse" powder or a "miticide" but I'm just not sure. @rebrascora is much more familiar with what products are available to you.

Yes, I would treat the whole flock, plus clean out your bedding/coop/nesting boxes and treat that as well. Follow your product label, but generally you want to repeat treatment of birds and housing in 7-10days.

Natural treatments may used as "prevention" in the future, but an active infestation needs to be addressed quickly and effectively with a pesticide for poultry so your birds can recover. Just my thoughts:)

thank you both

Nettex Total Mite Kill is one of the products I use. It is widely available at feed stores or online, is marketed specifically for poultry, contains Permethrin and Tetramethrin and comes in a 500ml concentrate bottle to be diluted 1part product with 10 parts water or you can purchase it diluted and ready for use in a trigger sprayer. It's better value for money if you buy the concentrate and trigger sprayers are cheap.
I alternate with Smite which is a DE product.... I know many people on BYC don't like DE but it has worked for me in the past and I prefer to alternate treatments to prevent resistance. I have had Smite work against an infestation on more than one occasion but it has also failed on occasion too.... I haven't yet figured out why. If you have a serious problem the you are probably best hitting it hard with Permethrin.
