I'm not getting off to the best start this season. I had my latest gosling quit last night when attempting to zip, over 28 hours after it externally pipped.

I'm not losing enough moisture (maintaining 30-35% humidity) and have been having problems as a result. So I'm now dropping it to 20-25% and cooling more often in hopes that will help. My first dewlap egg is on day 21, have a total of 11 developing between days 7-21, and am going to set a few more today. I will be so bummed if I am not able to hatch two buff girls for my yearling boys.

J, I am so sorry your are having trouble with your dewlaps trying to hatch.

I have been keeping my incubators pretty dry and the moisture loss has been good. I have it down to 20% to 25%. The goslings seem to develope better with it lower. I keep bringing in more eggs for the incubators. There have been losses but while developing or the eggs got too cold before I brought them in or not fertile.

So while my girls are still laying I will keep snatching eggs. Brought in 3 more today.

I have just one egg to put into lockdown and stop turning. Today is day 28 for the egg. I have eggs due at different dates.

My incubators both have fans that run in them so this also helps to dry the eggs out. I do have the incubators in my bedroom bathroom.

Thanks for the condolences. Actually, it is my yearling Africans that I am having problems with, not my dewlaps. The only two dewlap girls that I am setting eggs from are 2yo and started laying later in the season. So far, they are showing much stronger development than my early season African eggs and hopefully they will hatch better too. My first dewlap egg is on day 21 today. I will definitely keep it closer to 20% and monitor air cell space/dip closely. Oddly, my duck eggs have been hatching strong in the same conditions.

I too am continuing to collect 2-4 eggs daily, but it is tapering off fast. I have 3 geese that are broody now, each sitting on 4-8 eggs each. Maybe they can hatch babies better than my cheapo styro bator.

for your egg on day 28!

Woo finish line in sight!

I'm on day 23 for my lone goose egg. I can still make out the slightest bit of movement but cannot see for beans. My duck eggs are on day 21. Some of those eggs are so full I just can't see anything. :| I have 2 more goose eggs in there but they are on day 10- so a little staggered. I only have 1 goose and she is only laying 2-3 eggs a week so it's taking a while to save up eggs to put in the incubator. She's laid 2 more this past week and I think she's about done for the year. I'm going to give her a couple more days and hope for a 3 rd egg and put them in and cross my fingers. I'm sure it's helpful in my case to have a broody or more females laying eggs to increase my odds of getting a gosling lol.

So, hatch is complete! I got 11 out of 13 that went into lockdown. Yay! I didn't know I was a goose person until these hatched... LOL!!

QUESTION: One of my goslings hatched with a leg that won't straighten out. I noticed last night at approx 24 hrs of age. I push on it, and it's like it's locked.TIGHT. Any suggestions??

The foot is otherwise pliable and the joints do not look swollen in comparison to the other leg. The other leg/foot are normal and he/she is able to propel itself where it wants to go

Please do not suggest culling. Unless this bird is in pain, we would do our best to ensure it had as good a life as possible - even making special concessions. We tend to attract the 'franken-birds' as my husband calls them and these birds are our pets (crossed beak, chick with hole at top middle of beak, a goose/duck bonded pair, a chick that thinks it's a duck...). We do NOT use the eggs/products from these birds for sale. They are strictly pets and all given special treatment.

I am a stay at home mom with a disability and my birds are my joy. If there's one more that needs my time, I'm happy to give it.

Sorry to hear, Iain. The loss of your lone gosling and that of all the others saddens me.

Congrats on the great hatch!! Have you tried water therapy yet with the little one? Perhaps that will help unlock the joint?
