The smaller ones are about 2.5 weeks younger than the older ones. I have not a clue on breed. I was hoping someone would be able to help me ID all of them. They are very cute. Are the lil yellow grey ones Toulouse?
thought I'd never get through all those posts!
here's my miserable update...my largest set (4 eggs) was due on the 1st...candled about three days before and found two had recently just died in shell...that left me with two for this hatch..WELL...one internally pipped and upon candling, I could see fluid inside the egg and it looked as though it's little mouth was near the fluid. I worried it would drown so I opened it up and sure enough there was SO MUCH extra runny fluid in there. I was surprised the little thing even made it to internal pipping. I got as much fluid out of the shell and away from its bill as I could and put it in lockdown but the poor baby died within 24 hrs. That left me with one more egg in this set...something just didn't look right at candling...looked like the position was wrong, so I waited a while and then candled again..still no internal pipping. I went in and found that it had a tiny slit in the membrane. Just enough so I was starting to take in oxygen. Waited longer...still no progress, but now the membrane and veins were drying up so I could remove it and see what was going on...NEVER saw such a thing in my life! It's head was literally held down by the "umbilical cord" and it was so tight that circulation was being cut off to the egg sac and the babies head was full of excess fluid and starting to get misshapen. I pulled it's head out from under the cord and hoped for the best, but it too died within 24 hrs.
I now have 2 eggs due in 2 days and one looks to have quite a bit of moisture inside still...so I don't know how it's gonna go. I can only hope for the best. After these two hatch (or don't) I did have two more eggs to go...HOWEVER...my idiot self DROPPED one of them and put a huge crack in it and nearly broke the other eggs in the process. Needless to say, the cracked one died...so I have two due in two days..and then one more in the bator...and one lone egg under a buff hen...and then it's all she wrote for this year! What a bummer huh?!? I am blessed and pleased to have hatched a total of 6 babies so far...I'm learning not to ever PLAN on anything with these geese and just HOPE for the best... it sounds to me like other than miss River Goddess...aka...comedy queen!!!...we're all having a bit of difficulty with the dewlaps this season. I guess it's just the year for it? Next year we'll all have more babies than we know what to do with!!!
I hope so to J, guess you'll be spending a lot of time bator watching this weekend.So.... here's my update for this weekend's hatch. I have 3 eggs in lockdown: two from my dewlap trio and one from my white African. One of the dewlaps is working on external pip and seems quite strong. I betcha it is a boy!The white African has just internally pipped, and the other dewlap egg looks to be 1-2 days behind. It didn't lose as much moisture as the others and I'm a little worried about it hatching ok, but I hope it makes it.![]()
