Let's have a gosling hatchalong!

This morning both of Sissy's babies hatched! One was out and the other one was ooching out of the egg. Sissy was laying on 14 eggs, but she's not that big of a girl, so we took 4 in and put them in the incubator. 2 were viable. So our One-Eyed African girl and her mate, Ron have successfully reproduced! We're so excited. Sissy's still laying on 8 which are expected to hatch any time this weekend. We are hopeful that at least one or two hatch for our new Mama.

A message from "Over the pond", we appear to have reached the end of our season for Embdens hatching although I have one elder who is taking to sitting in the wife's rose bed - watch this space.
Our last batch of 7 eggs went a bit squiff, 2 duds, 2 dead in shells, one hatched but had a strangely twisted neck and legs, was very weak and died after 36 hours. Consequently I initially was feeding the last two who hatched, a brewers yeast mix to help them along and after a week they are like mexican jumping beans. Soon they will join the other 9 making an English Footbal team of 11.

They have developed an amusing habit in their temporary pen. We use a childs play pit/paddle pool (without water) to keep them in until we transfer them to the outside shed. Previously, we have made the pen smaller by placing small bales of straw in it, which are wrapped in plastic. This past few days the little minx have taken to jumping onto the top of the bale then sliding down the slope running round the back jumping onto the top again and then sliding down again. Running round...I think you get it. Here are a couple of images to explain

Anyone says that geese are not intelligent needs to raise a couple goslings to straighten them out....

Hi All

Sorry a busy week with the children off school and plenty to do around here!!!

Paul - great pictures and so pleased you posted them. Sorry to hear the last few eggs were not such a high hatch rate.

Iain - Got everything crossed this time for the Buff female. Surely it'll happen this time!!!!

Had another good hatch of Dewlaps last weekend with 4 out of 5 hatching. I failed just before internal pipping and had a 16% weight loss so a mystery. Got another 2 Buffs (one from each pair) so we're hoping one's a gander and we know the other is female.

We're up to 8 Buffs now. We hatched 5 from the Split to Buff pairing (these will have to be DNA sexed and hoping for males) and 3 from the Split to Grey pair so these are known females.

My 2 sebbies are getting their primaries on the wingstips and doing something that i don't remember the am. Buffs doing when they were youngsters. The weight of the new feathers is making it difficult for these two to keep their wings tucked when they walk. Just the last joint keeps slipping down like sweatpants without a cord tie and they get so frustrated that they just flop down on the ground and refuse to go any further. Guess they'll start to stretch wings put soon and solvevproblen

Beautiful pictures, everyone!! You guys have been chatty while I've been away from my computer. Thanks for the fun reading. May we have a drum roll please..............................
When I got home from work today, I found a buff baby in my bator!
