Let's have a gosling hatchalong!

Thanks PSue! Excited to see how everything goes for everyone! Hoping and Praying for happy, healthy goslings all around!

Good morning everyone. Well, this morning the baby has his head out of the egg, but seems very weak. It is from one of my first year layers and an egg that is only slightly bigger than an extra large duck egg: Both marks against the poor little thing.

I'll keep you guys posted, but don't expect to know much for several hours. The best thing I can do for it, is just watch the humidity in the hatcher and keep a close eye on things. I will be peeking in on it a couple times an hour to see if it has perked up any.

From the little bill, it is obvious this little fella, should it survive, is a Pom x Toulouse cross. A couple of my 1st year girls broke INTO the area where I am keeping the Toulouse pair in early February.: The mama goose of this particular egg was one of the three that got in with Ozzie and Harriet. Even though I evicted them pretty quickly (could have only been in there 20-30 minutes), it would seem that the gander took good advantage of that time.

So, I fortified the gate into the Toulouse area and have had no further "infiltrations". That is also one of the reasons why I waited to start filling my hatching egg orders till the first week of March: I wanted to make eggs had better fertility and had no chance of being crosses.

Have a great day everyone.

1/2 hour unsupervised is all it took

I had QUITE a surprise a few minutes ago when I went to do my daily candling, cooling, and misting session. One of the two eggs due to hatch Wednesday had pipped in the incubator. I carefully and quickly moved it to the hatcher.
Send some good hatching vibes for the poor confused over-eager gosling. I hope the little guy makes it!

Congratulations to everyone whose goslings have started to hatch already!

Also, congrats to all those folks who are scoring the NICE big incubators: I am SO jealous. I am getting SO many eggs, that I could be hatching in between filling orders that it makes me sad.

I have gotten 34 eggs already this month: More than enough to fill my egg orders and have plenty of extras.

for the early baby!!

Am I too late to join you guys? I've got 12 fertile exhibition dewlap toulouse (both grey and buff) eggs in the bator and more being laid daily! I'm SUPER excited to say the least!

1MrsMagoo, you simply must give us an update! How's the surprise baby doing?

Welcome!!!! It's great having another dewlap hatcher. I will be setting my first buff dewlap eggs this week.

My greys also started laying this week but have to wait 7-10 days to set any of their eggs because there were not separated from my production Toulouse pair (that is fixed now). But I am still waiting for my show quality grey girls (bred to buff ganders) to start laying... those are the ones I am most excited about!

I just came in from taking care of the animals and am sad to say the little guy didn't make it.

Well, the next ones are due on Wednesday and Thursday so I hope those fare better!

Aww, sorry you lost a baby 1Mrs Magoo.

You could try making your own 'bator. There are lots of designs floating around here somewhere....
The mystery eggs I picked up a while back are going into lockdown today!

Thanks Irishgirl. It happens sometimes and is always sad when it does. It just makes me appreciate the ones that hatch even more!

On your mystery eggs Irish!

Yes, building an incubator is on our "to do" list. I downloaded a few sets of plans and have located the parts we need. Now we just need to have some time when we don't 15 other more pressing projects in line before it!

We have some extra furniture grade plywood left over from some cabinets we built for a local gas station. We are going to pick up some extra egg turners from Tractor Supply while they were on sale and build the bator around those. I figure if the parts are here, we'll be more likely to get it done sooner: I hope.

Since I separated my production Toulouse gander from my grey dewlap girls yesterday.... how long would you guys wait to set eggs from the girls? I weighed the egg my girl laid this morning (her third) and it is 216 grams. Her babies are going to be big!
