Let's have a gosling hatchalong!

I have seen backwards babies with both ducks an geese, but I do not know why waterfowl get positioned backwards. It is not that uncommon. Last year, I did not have my own breeding stock, so all my eggs were shipped. I saw wonky cells, blown aircells, and babies positioned wrong. If they pipped, they would usually make it, often without help.

Speaking of pipping... my solo gosling is starting day 29 and has not internally pipped. His aircell dipped dramatically in the past week like he turned into the right position, and was rocking away last night like he was trying to internally pip... but no sign of pip this morning. I'm getting a little concerned the gosling may not hatch.

On the bright side, I have 3 more eggs on day 23.... and my #1 prized grey dewlap's first egg is already veining at the start of day 5!

Amy try and make sure you are turning an odd number all the time. This keeps them from resting on the same spot all night two nights in a row (or more). Are the eggs loosing enough during incubation? Lastly are they first year eggs you are having this issue with? First years with sebbies seem to be more narrow and they can have trouble turning up in the egg.

I try to keep it to 3 turns if I am home. This is happening with older girls and young. And a friend just had one of the Toulouse hatch that way. They are in their 4th year.

The eggs are all losing weight - humidity in the house is about 17%. Strange!

Congrats on the Dewlaps' eggs, Iain!

So odd you are having it in all ages and from both species too. We had one this year, but it was a first year layer who needed the hole enlarged some so it could breath well. Good luck with this round of hatching! We are in lockdown again here with sebbie and dewlap eggs, all have externally pipped over night.

I set eggs Sat. the 16th , and added a few more the next 3 days
1) set Silky Duck Eggs from Holderreads birds. Not sure how long they will lay and want to get as many as I can while I can-)28 or so (3 ducks laying- One white w/snowy drake, one black female with a black bibbed drake, and one brown? with a snowymallard silky drake.(need to research her color more, she may be a fawn something...
2) in a few good sized Dutch Hookbill eggs (they are laying )
3)My 3 Shetland Geese from Holdereads had just starting giving me a few eggs so I checked fertility and they seemed to be , so had 3 within the window.
4) One lonely Super African from my Holderead pair. (First year...what the heck)
I have 5 Shetlands (out of 9 survived to breed ;0( . Took 2 years to get breeding group. First year I just bought 5, only one female in group , She and another Gander died , I think maybe botulism...during a real dry spell. I lost one to I think eating Pampass grass and getting choked(now fenced off from them. And another ? weakened and stopped eating and died in a week. (I keep saying i'd do autopsies, but...... Then last year I got 2 pair from him. So I ended up with 2 gandars and 3 geese.
I got it at 101 and set them at 55% humidity...but had to bump it up as it went down to 100. I gotten another accurite and figured where the vents were , trying to get it at right level at top of eggs...didn't turn the first 24-36 hours. Someof the duck eggs were kept in garage for up to 10 days ,(above freezing, to high 50's+) I have another still air I will set up in April for my Penciled Runners, silkies and more geese eggs. UNLESS someone decides to set......but all first year geese so unlikely.
Oh, and first year incubating goose eggs, I had one goose set some years ago and one baby ended up crushed, I saved one ,and others got thrown out of nest by mom (Tufted buff 2nd year). Last year I was hatching duck eggs for first time, but had 3 huge power outages, and I think my temp was too low so it was a dismal hatch. Got a few hookbills and runners.

Mominoz, welcome to the thread and best of luck hatching babies from all your wonderful breeds! I noticed in your signature line you have an arab and 2 half arabs. What are your 2 half arabs crossed with? I have an arab and a percheron/arab cross. Love them!!

Last night when after allowing the eggs to cool, I noticed that there was a cracked egg. :hit At first I had no idea what happened but after carefully looking at everything, I now know that I didn't have the eggs placed correctly in the incubator and I set the incubator top down on an egg and it slightly cracked it. I am so upset !!!!!! :hit

Oh no! I thought I did that one day! I have a brinsea and the lid slipped when I was putting it back on and hit a egg or two. Thankfully they were thick enough not to crack. Did you leave it? How far along are they?

Yes, I am so mad at myself, I could kick my own self in the rear. I just left the egg in there to see if it will hatch. Lock down is Monday, so hatching is scheduled next week. I am so upset. I hope that it is ok. And I only had 4 fertile eggs, although 1 is VERY small and I don't think it will hatch, so now I am down another 1, so now I only have 2 fertile eggs. :hit

I hope my geese, ducks, and turkeys come through for me and hatch what's under them. :hit

I'm not having good luck with these eggs. :hit
