Let's have a gosling hatchalong!

I've been fighting those separate lenses for some time now, but losing the battle methinks.

I LOVE the white birds too, but Paige is a buff saddleback whom a year of heavy sun has faded to a dirty white. Here's a pic of her from earlier this year. Still faded, but not as much as now. She is very quirky and quite funny.

I can see the buff now. My Buff ducks - now that the season is far in they are pretty sun bleached too. If it weren't for the beak you might not tell them apart from my Pekins. When freshly feathered Buff is SO pretty on waterfowl!! Gorgeous goose!

I dabble in photography too. Love to take pics. My baby pics were taken with my phone though so they sucked lol.

My two new goslings look to be healthy. One to go still he hasnt externally pipped yet but im hoping he does. Im so proud of my chinese pair, their first year and out of 9 eggs set, 8 developed. 1 cracked and died, 7 made it to lockdown. 5 have hatched(even though 2 died after) and still one to go. I think thats pretty good fertility for first year pairs.

My duck eggs are due next thursday, all 12 are still wiggling away. Cant wait to see those little ones. My first time incubating ducks
I'm down to my iPhone and big girl camera. I use my iPhone the most but when I have time to bust out my big girl camera watch out! I'm the bird'arazzi around here! :D

The mama and the papa (although they are not brooding themselves) - they are only hatchery Africans.

My goose, Sarah

Chuck, our gander.

I do not SEE hatchery Geese ! I see beautiful spoiled companions !

Congrats on the embdens, good luck with the sebbie, and very sorry about the dewlaps not being fertile this year. How's things going otherwise?

RG - as you have a pale and darker gosling it does sound like you have a pair, the male being the paler dilute colour. If you then paired him to a White African you would get:

25% White (both sexes), 25% Dimorphic (both sexes - think of Pilgrims), 25% Grey (both sexes though males dilute) and 25% Saddleback (both sexes but males dilute).

That's quite a range for anyone's tastes but I think only the Buffs, Greys (aka Browns) and Whites are recognised colours but not 100% sure as I'm in the UK. My favourites are Buffs and Whites. This is our Buff Gander

Beautiful!!! Do you think the gosling RG hatched will be the grey splash or buff??? It came from a white female, but the gander could be either brown or brown/white cross. Not sure as they are in a group and quite frankly, I thought she was primarily paired with my white gander. Her 1st gosling (dead in shell) was white.

Well it looks like I am getting a Buff colored Fattie Dewie Girl from my Slate Egg !!!

One more Shimmer egg to go on this batch!
I'm very happy they are doing so well for you! Congrats!!!

But I'll be so jealous if you get a 2nd girl when I'm hatching all the boys from Slate & Shimmer.............

Pete -- LOVE that gander. Beautiful!

You guys have a great weekend. I hope to have a couple pastel call ducks hatched by the time I get home today.

And a quick pic-- Alex and his happy family. Man they look ratty this time of year, but still a good picture of them having fun. Wish I had a pool

And Paige with one of the Munchers....

Stunning! I never get tired of seeing pics of your geese (and other pets)!

Ahhh I'm soooo loving all these gorgeous baby goose pics!! I have 1 lone egg (again) still doing well. I need to get this egg to May 6. Come on baby! :D If not I am buying some goose eggs from a local African breeder and try those. This is really my geese's first year (is that what is called a 'yearling'?) - although mating not all my eggs seem to even be fertile. Day 10 on most of the eggs are usually lacking any veining and just glowing yellow. It was worth a shot though!

Both pretty sweet considering it is breeding season. Really thought we'd have more problems than we have. When people find out we have Africans people gasp. "Oh! You have the meanest breed!" I'd never heard of such a thing until people started gasping about it this year. Is that 'truth'? Someone even informed me that their local feed store was selling African goslings and the tub was labeled "Very Aggressive". :|

My husband's very favorite bird is our hatchery African gander. We have all kinds of geese from cross-bred barnyard to high end quality dewlap Toulouse. They are all wonderful. Your pair are lovely and I totally get what you are saying about Africans not living up to they so-called reputation. Our Africans are much nicer as a whole towards everyone during breeding season that my dewlaps. I love their personalities!

How many are you hatching weekly ? I love hatching my sebbies ! I have 4 in LD right now too
love.gif
been averaging 2-7 fertile depending on the weather. Several of my girls stop when it's cold and 2 of the dewlaps I think are done for the year.

Thanks J, with the mess up of having 2 girls separated as a pair and the gander injuring his wing... it just wasn't to be this year. Next year should be great though. Life is hectic as we have moved into the Mobile home across the street. Who would have thought that moving within carrying distance would still take soooo much time. Looking to fence another area and move pens soon so we can allow everyone out all day even at breeding season and still allow then access to their houses. Hatched Lemon and Lavender Orphington chicks and 20 mix ducks today... put 4 Embden eggs into the Hatcher.

RG - so your Sebs stopped laying for awhile and then started up again? Mine hasn't laid an egg for almost a week I think. I'm hoping she'll start up again as she's only laid about 15 eggs, I think. My ducks stopped for awhile, too, but they are starting again.

I'm wondering if its the weather affecting the geese?

I have to say, too, that I am loving my little goslings. I can't believe how attached they are to me and my daughter. I have another Seb egg working on an internal pip and another one that's not far behind. AND...I'm supposed to be getting my American Blue and Lav goslings from Holderread this week!
