I candle my geese eggs today as thursday is 28 days for the.. I have three that have internal pip.. I am so excited ,, this is my first hatch of geese

I guess i need to candle my eggs under my goose. I let it get away from me as to when she started sitting for sure. I know when I thought she was but then she was out and about every day for a week or so and didnt notice for sure when she settled in for sure. Not even sure if the eggs were to old by the time she settled on them and she is so darn cranky thaat I hate to get near her. I get her off every three days or so to get all the spare eggs that the other two geese deposite every other day or so.

My goose last year used the older eggs to make a ring around the newer ones... it helps them stablize the temps

Does anyone know how much Alison charges per gosling for her Buff Dewlaps...I've totally forgotten and she hasn't answered my emails.

Here's my update...the eggs in the nest had to be taken because the girls started fighting over who they thought should set...they broke one egg and the other five are no grows/infertile. Since then, Gertrude has laid one more egg so we shall see what happens with it.

It will literally be the last egg I set from my birds this year...unless of course the girls decide to lay me another clutch! The last egg I had in the bator was dead in shell this morning. It too had too much fluid inside and probably wouldn't have made it even if it did grow to term. I'm so depressed about this season's results. I have my one buff girl that I get to keep but I sold a little grey gosling the other day and since the buyer had no other geese or ducks, I felt it was only right to sell him my other buff baby to go along with the grey. I really didn't want to do that but felt it was the best thing for the grey baby. The gosling I kept has baby duck buddies and will be introduced into the flock when it gets a little bigger. Now I'm on the hunt for a couple of babies from really good stock to add to my birds. IF I can swing it price wise, that is. Seems with me, something ALWAYS comes up and my hopes and dreams get squashed! I hope everyone else has more success than I did this year. Sounds like most of you are doing great!

Thanks! The three that just hatched are all dewlaps.... two more grey split to buff boys from Slate and Shimmer (which brings my total to 8 boys hatched from my buff/grey trio) and the other one is a surprise grey dewlap (gender unknown) from my broody Misty. I have another surprise egg from my production Toulouse trying to externally pip this morning and a couple more not far behind. My next set of African eggs are from my deceased Peanut's nest (mostly from one of my white African girls, Peanut's nest-mate), the first of which (Peanut's last egg) should internally pip tomorrow.

Jean.... I got a call from my post office this morning, panicked because they had a box marked with live birds but couldn't hear anything inside. They were quite relieved to learn it is an empty box. Thanks for the fast shipping and I look forward to sending out babies to you next Monday!!

Sorry to hear that your hatching season did not go as well as you had hoped, but at least you have a buff baby. Me.... I have hatched out 9 dewlaps so far, but have yet to get a single buff. Luckily I have another 8-9 eggs going with more to set tonight, but I'll probably get another 8-10 boys.

Sorry about Iain and AnimalAddictions disappointments but it just goes that way sometimes.

We've been very busy with research and data recording as we try to refine our theories of incubation. We have made some changes this year which cost us some eggs but feel we're well on the right track now

Don't want to say too much until our next hatch is over and they're all on Day 27. A total of 11 eggs and hoping for another Buff Dewlap in those numbers.

My advice for now is WEIGH ALL YOUR EGGS WHEN LAID and write the laying date and weight (in grammes) on the egg. Scales need not be expensive and those for kitchen use are ideal.
