Lets talk about goats!

ringolta, now you just need to breed them 5 months before your birthday, and you will get goats for your birthday every year ;-)

I got goats for my birthday from my husband. He said he felt weird but he knew that's what I wanted. I love the picture of Ruth. Pleas post baby pics once they have them.

I can't think of a better birthday gift!

LOL! The guys at work were pretty sure GAM was going to divorce me for getting her goats for our anniversary earlier this month. In case you have one coming up, Hallmark.com says the traditional 14th anniversary gift is animals*.

I just had my 10 year last month, so 14 year anniversary is a while down the road... Right now we have: chickens (about 60) that number will go down to about 40 after this weekend. I'm not keeping 20 Roos for the winter! Rabbits, (3 female, 2 male) I think our baby count is 20. And 7 goats, all ND 3 pregnant yearlings, 2 doe that I'm putting with the buck Saturday, and two bucklings about 6 months old.

I have a question for you guys. My two doe that are not bred (yet) have been difficult to detect heat. Only of my doe is currently in milk, and we NEED her milk. Is there a good way to run the buck with her without making my milk taste like stinky buck in rut?

New little goat run-in ...

Very cool! Im planning on doing a small run in like that(4' high, 6' long, 4' wide) in the next couple of weeks. I like the roof especially on yours. I might enclose 4' of it so they have somewhere to go when it is raining.

I'm getting 2 pregnant nubian/boer goats this month!! I have a pen for them, but I was wondering if I could turn them out with my 2 horses for the winter?? The horses live in a pasture and get big round bales of hay which the goats could eat with them.. I would put the goats in their pen to eat grain and overnight. The goats do have horns too!

I am also considering getting a 7 month old filly. Can a filly live with my 9 year old mare, 13 year old gelding, and the little goats? Ideas? Thank you!!

I've read that people put goats with their horses. What kind of fence do you have?

Putting goats and horses together is going to fully depend on your horse. Some horses are aggressive toward smaller animals and others couldn't care less who they're sharing space with. If you're going to introduce new animals though, try to do it with them on opposite sides of fence. That way they can see and smell each other but the horse can't get to the goat if it does take exception to the new addition.
