Hmm, that makes sense. I'll look again and see if I can find any quality ones within like an hour or maybe I could make a trip/weekend out of getting one aha

What are your opinions on getting some from a fair? That was my other thought as well. There are a lot of big agricultural fairs here late summer and into fall I could visit maybe

Oh and some of them have big ADGA shows, etc. So maybe even if I don't buy from the fair, I can talk to breeders?

I'm not too picky but I was hoping for Nigerian Dwarf (there's actually a ton of those), a dairy breed, or a Boer. Wethers. For pets and brush clearing. What do you think would be best for that?

Where do you guys find goats? I just looked on Craigslist for the first time in forever and I did find quite a few (kidding season??) but they're all either not quite what I want or too far away. :/ I guess I could travel a little but am hoping to find something closer

I travel far for my goats as I'm looking for nice quality animals. I just travelled 8 hours one way for two spotted boers. I also have a dairy doe I travelled 4.5 hours one way for and she has thrown me awesome show quality kids. I also like to get new business for my area.

As for what breed would be the best for pets and brush clearing, get a large breed not dwarfs. I have boers and alpine/lamancha recorded grades. Love them!

Wow that's far!! Although it's weird, if I was looking for a dog and/or buying from a breeder, I would travel that far (maybe) so not sure why I wouldn't for goats, maybe I need to reconsider travel. I guess it's also because I don't really want or need mine to be show quality or anything and I'm not breeding them so I figure there must be goats around here? But I do want them healthy too so I'll keep looking around. And I'll scratch the dwarf breeds, thanks. Although do you think they would get along with a bigger breed or no?

There really aren't Boers here except for this one guy in I think Connecticut? I think it's Luciano Farms or something? And they're supposedly show quality so they're expensive but they do also havr lower priced and meat ones I think. But most Boers it's either show quality or meat prices, which is usually like per pound over 50 pounds, which most would be pretty fast?, so it adds up. :/

Oh and the other problem is even though I got my license a year ago (I was really late, I'm 23 ), I mostly just drive around here and we leased a car in August so I only really drive that, which I don't want to put goats in, and not sure if it could tow something? Even so, never driven a trailer. And the bigger cars that could tow or fit a goat in the back, I've hardly driven so long story short, my parents would probably have to go with me or drive and I don't think they would want to put the miles on the car and/or drive that far just to start yet another animal/hobby lol

BUT.

We are going to a couple music festivals this year and hoping to go to some fairs too plus my mom has family in PA so maybe I can look around those areas and convince them to bring some goats home.

BUT.

You could pay the breeder a delivery fee if they are willing to travel given your circumstances or you could hire a transport company. You can even find some people making trips that are willing to pick up other animals.

I see fairs more as networking opportunities. I am not looking to buy the animal at the show, given potential exposure to diseases and the stress it puts on the animal. You can find a breeder you like and then see if they have other available stock.

I'm freaking out a little bit. Vet seems worried he might have to be put down. Getting blood work right now to check his liver and blood counts. Hoping they are all okay and I can just deal with cl. What are the odds the boil isn't cl? He said it was in a weird place for it.

I'm not a vet but that sounds a little alarmist-y on his part. He doesn't even know what it is yet!

If it's a weird place for CL then it sounds like a great chance it might not be it! And CL is certainly not a death sentence, especially being that you're not planning on breeding goats, just keeping the two boys you have.
