Well, actually, you do need the apostrophe because "correcting" is a gerund, not a verb, and "someone's" is a possessive pronoun being used as a limiting adjective modifying the infinitives "to hear or to read".
Edited to add the s on to the compound "infinitive".
As a grammar nazi (I only correct myself- I agree it would be rude otherwise), I've just fallen in love with your vibrant display of grammatical rulings...are you also a neurotic and voracious reader?

No, just neurotic when my reading is compared to my wife's voracious reading.
People not saying excuse me. Not for passing gas , but for going in front of them or asking to to get by.
Also respecting the elderly, I get sooo upset when I see or hear someone being rude or mean to an elderly person.
Smacking gum makes me want to smack someone. Especially when they are near me, or talking to me.

Forgive me, I had not read your detailed response before posting mine. However "grammatically correct" your explanation is (and bravo for it) In the common vernacular, the "is" is not necessary. Although it maybe not "proper" or as my friend from New Zealand always says "the Queens English", it is an acceptable sentence structure.
