Let's talk Cuckoo and WHITE marans... breeding strategies...

A new line of GCM can still make a standard or a silver it just depends on if they get that gold wildtype gene. GCM have to be bred out for several genertaions to breed true.

------------------
Hi,
I can see how it must seem that to get wildtype, one must get the "gold wildtype gene". However, this is not really so. In fact,
Golden Salmon manifests itself by not having any other genes than wildtype.
e+/e+ s+/s+(-) is the base color from which all colors in poultry spring. How is this possible? Note that every other color in poultry
is created by adding or subtracting genes from Golden Salmon to create other colors. There are no hypostatic genes in Golden Salmon.
It stands alone, uncorrupted. One doesn't see Golden Salmon manifest by getting a specific gene. One sees Golden Salmon manifest
when all other color genes and modifiers are not present. Golden Salmon is a completely recessive color pallete. This is why it always
breeds true in its pure form. This is also why true Goldn Salmon is so rare. It is much easier to corrupt Golden Salmon than to breed it
in pure form. However, the genetic percentages are there for it to mnaifest in pure form, if one is willing to take the time. It is not necessary
to go outside the breed in order to breed Golden Salmon.
Start with a Golden Salmon cock and a Silver Salmon hen and work from there.
in-breeding and back-crossing until Golden Salmon shows up in both sexes. If two breeders do this with stock from different breeders, then
when they finally get pure Golden Salmon in both sexes, they can exchange birds and linebreed withut losing vitality. If they find the need
to out-cross many generations later, they can exchange stock one again, not getting any closer than 1st or 2nd cousin to the birds in their own
flock. See W.H. (Wid) Card's Book on "Breeding Laws"in poultry at http://www.archive.org for the breeding plan to do this. There's a nice
diagram with detailed explanation.
Best Regards,
Karen
(P.S. It is indeed unfortunate that it's very difficult to tell if a Golden Salmon male is carrying melanizers or not. One should only use a Golden Salmon male from 2 Golden Salmon parents. Even better if the grandparents were also Golden Salmon. Never use a male or female from 1 or 2 Black Copper parents. The melanizers will drive you nuts. Ones' male must be pure Golden Salmon or one risks an exercise in futility. Been there, done that, what frustration!!)

ok having a little trouble up loading pics so ill try one at a time...

hatched out my first chicks of the year today and got my 1st white marans chick thought i would share...

this is the dad... single barred out of a black marans dad and a white marans hen... out of 50+ chicks this is the only one that was not white based...

I'm going to see if i can hatch out more paint marans this year... i hatched several out last year including one that was perfect about 25% black on a white body with none of the black spots being bigger than a Quarter... i did not know how rare that coloration was and butchered or sold them all lol... so I'm hoping ill hatch more this year... and will breed for them :)

the chick

is this 2 heavy of foot feathers ???

this one will have a black feather or 2 on its back

I would not breed because the middle toe has feathers. That is my first cull at day old. I want correct feathered legs. I like lots of feathers BUT NOT on the middle toe. sorry

ya that was y i was asking lol... i have been working on increasing the foot feathers the last 3 years i guess i have went to far lol... the hen i started with just had stubs... its so hard to know exactly where to go with it... maby it was just this combo of parents or maby he will be the only one like that... i have a white rooster that im growing out that looks great... i will take the barred roo out and put the white one in... and a little later on ill put a black roo in and hatch a few more chicks... i plan on hatching every egg these 2 hens lay all summer/fall and see what i can get...
i culled really hard last year just keeping these 2 hens and no roosters... then in the late fall i hatched a couple of chicks and one rooster looks great...

the other thing i don't like about this chick is the little bit of black on him... its not enough to make it a paint but its to much for a white... will just have to see how the rest of my hatching goes...

I would not breed because the middle toe has feathers. That is my first cull at day old. I want correct feathered legs. I like lots of feathers BUT NOT on the middle toe. sorry

What a cool project..Paint Marans!! Just keep breeding the same parents eventually you will get some babies with the clean middle toe. Sometimes the whites can hide stuff so those ladies might be hiding cuckoo or black or something else too. I have some white orpington hens who mated with a pure black male made cuckoos. I guess depends on if the white is dominant or recessive.
How is your Lavender project coming along? Are you still working with those?

yep in about 3 or 4 weeks ill put the roo and hens together for my F3 generation... coming on pretty good... im about to start a speckled Marans project as well... i love projects lol...
