Let's talk Golden Cuckoo Marans!

Pics
more and more people start working with a GCM that is a good news.
Morbius18 your GCM cockerels and pullets are looking gorgeous.

Nice of you sending Fertile GCM eggs for free to Crees 57i. you are a true breeders BRAVO

I'm hoping the US will establish a standard for GCMs. The more of us breeding the ER birds, the greater chance these will be accepted. I like having a hand in shaping the standard here too.

That is a good spirit my friend.you are having a good result with the ER type GCM stick with t it s only mater of time and they will be accepted into the standard .hopefully they will be accepted as ER type So the hen s can keep they Golden hackles. Not like the Silver cuckoo hen s . I just learn from DMRippy that a silver cuckoo hen s they should not have hackles ( not Birchen type) in your standard.. very interesting to see how they are going to work this one out because a Silver cuckoo and the Golden cuckoo are the same just different colour .one is silver the other is Golden like the black copper and the Birchen. they are a same just different colour.

what your plan for the young GCM subject how you are going to breed them?

Me I m planning this year breeding season to breed them .GCM.
1) together brother X sisters = to get F2. GCM
2) GCM cockerel X BCM hen s= F1 50% GCM and 50% BCM
3) BCM Rooster X GCM pullets = F1 cockerels GCM dark. pullets BCM.

I m going to do the same with a Silver cuckoo by crossing them to the Birchen . purify the Silver and breed out any Autosomal Red Ar+genes

Good luck with your work Hope more people like you joint the GCM breeding project.

one question for you my friend .it s possible for you to receive fertile eggs from different country because I can organize some thing for you from France- New and pure GCM from dedicated breeders. Let me Know. We are working with a same variety and having a same goal ( to be accepted to all the standard )

I found this about importing eggs:
Poultry hatching eggs imported from countries designated as free of END
The following countries are considered by the USDA to be free of exotic Newcastle disease: Australia, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Denmark, Fiji, Finland, France, Greece, Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales, and the Isle of Man), Iceland, Republic of Ireland, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
Hatching eggs imported from these countries are not required to be quarantined. However, the hatching eggs must be accompanied by a veterinary health certificate issued by a national government veterinarian of the exporting country as well as by a USDA import permit (see exception for Canada below).

So it's possible, I'll look into it more.

I have my f1s in a breeding pen to test for recessives and to get f2s.

After hatching some eggs, I'll put the f1 gens with my F0 rooster to get F2s. Im also going to be putting some f1 golden cuckoo olive eggers with the F1 rooster. Thats the plan at least.

The trick is to find a flock and flock owner who is willing to jump thru all the regulatory hoops to get the eggs on a plane.
Best,
Karen

I crossed my GCM rooster with a buff orpington. She is just now laying. The lighter cream egg is her mothers and the shade of what she hatched from. The medium egg is hers. The dark one is a BCM for reference. I'm guessing he carries at least a 4 on the scale.

I am new to this thread, and just got 2 lemon or golden cuckoo maran hens and one Golden cuckoo maran rooster. Is the golden cuckoo maran a true breed, or a crossbreed? If I breed my hens with my roo and hatch eggs from them, will they be golden cuckoo, or will they look like something else?

Golden Cuckoo Marans breed true. However, if you think you have lemon cuckoo hens, those won't breed true with a Golden Cuckoo rooster. Could you post pics?

There was a guy years ago who had a hobby called Hornpipe Marans. In one of the Northeast States. There's an old website was out there years ago with genetics and bird pics which was accessible thru Arhive.org Wayback Machine but I have lost the Wayback URL. He was breeding Lemon Marans . Took him a while to figure out what they were. Finally found them in Europe and knew he had the same thing. They were eWh based and had a double dose of something ( gold, I think). Anyway, he finally sold them to a veteran breeder who didn't pursue them , however, gave them to his son, a poultry man, who also a problem with the birds throwing too many Wheaten Marans, and finally got rid of them. I don't know where they went from there. Ideally, I think Golden Cuckoo are e+ based? I see some are also ER based. I don't know what yours are based on. A bigger issue may be if you end up crossing alleles in the chicks. That will take some critical thinking on which chicks have which base alleles.
In any case, I think you will get Wheaten, and Golden Cuckoo. And minority of Lemons.
Best,
Karen
