Let's talk Golden Cuckoo Marans!

When we had our FGCM as chicks, you could definitely tell which one was a male. And in pictures, I have often figured out the same is true. The white spot does not seem to have a role, but if you have lighter/grayer chicks with more of a light brown on their head, they should be male. Hens are often darker and either dark grey or a dark brownish.

Not counting the blue babies, in Morbius' photo, I see 10 females and 2 males that I can identify. But I could be wrong

On double barred birds you can tell. Those are a F1 cross of a GCM rooster and a blue copper hen, so all the babies are single barred blue and blacks. The really lighter ones are light blue, almost double barred gray colored. Hoping for males on at least one of those.

So you are correct, usually the light gray ones are male. I'm just using the blue copper hen to work good egg color into my line:

10 of those are the GCM to the dark egg Blue copper. The rest are from the GCM to a splash hen and another Blue copper hen. I toe punched them and hatched in separate incubators to keep them separate.

This is another blue cockeral that i decided to keep to see how he developes. He has nice golding on his neck at a young age.

They show sex at a young age, you can see this blue guy in the center and two same age jubilee orpington cockerals beside him. Comb is waaay more pronounced with my marans vs the orps.

These are all F1 crosses to a blue copper marans hen. So all single barred blue golden cuckoo marans.

if you have room plus time and you want to work with her let me know .I ll explain to you how to breed her and recreate the variety from her and a GCM rooster .

Got quite a few questions for you...

I had another of these chicks pop up. I know the F0 carries it, would it be worthwhile to get this pullet and attempt to recreate it?

Is it a multi gene expression or a single, like recessive white?

You said she is a silver penciled, how can you tell the difference between the silver and gold if the rooster carries this?

Is this different than the gold he carries that shows on the hackle and saddle?

Also, I've only had pullets/hens of this coloration show up, is this a possible sex linked coloration, or just random not in my favor for a cockeral?

Is barring not present on these, or masked/changed to the penciling? With a double barred rooster, some barring should be present.

first of all what color is her hatch down before we go too deep .

your F0 rooster carries quite few extra genes to be able to produce this sort of chicks .

this gene don t work well as individual ,but they work together to form pattern .

the lacing gene ( Pg ) need a Db ( dark brown ) and the Dilute Di or Mahogany Mh to form a lacing pattern dominant than the barring ( I think your F0 carries Dilute Di not Mahogany Mh )

this is a reason why you are getting only few chicks and pullets too .because the F0 rooster carries the genes and passes them to his daughter . the son get more genes from mama hen

if you want to breed that pattern you need to mate a pullet back to her sire F0 .this way you ll be helping the genes to express them selves ..

PS ; I was trying to say they come in silver too Not she is silver .she is a golden pullets for sure .
