Cashmere is claimed to be one of the softest at 13 microns on average, but it's super expensive and the yarn is almost always super thin and/or mostly nylon with just a tiny amount of the real fiber. Same with angora rabbit.

Alpaca would be decently soft and warm, if it's cut with something sleek like bamboo/silk/ angora, it will feel softer and a bit cooler too in my experience. You'll want things under 24 microns I think, if you can find it labeled. A lot of people like Shetland too for against the skin. There are a few places that sell 18-19 micron merino on Etsy, one of them might be willing to spin it too if they have yarn also for sale.

Typically the lower the micron, the softer it is.

Thank you for this info, I never would have figured all this out without a lot of trial, error and money! I will do more looking on Etsy to see what I can find.

I live in the middle of nowhere, so I am limited to what ever 1 store carries which is not a yarn shop. Acrylic which is soft but basically plastic, and Cotton. Cotton is a natural fiber and is soft as well but I want to branch out to more exotic fibers, I will need to order online.
