LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

Not a bad idea on the Contest! We do a Broodies and their Babies contest every spring around Easter. You need to enter Cruella in our next contest!

I never want to hurt Cruellas feelings, she's a Star in my broody book! 🌟🌟

I will enter Cruella of course, but I don't think I'll win anything, since the photos will not be too good

I for one would love to see your photos entered! :hugs

Thank you:hugs! I will enter a few photos for sure, I just don't know if they'll be winner material. Hopefully I will enter a few photos of one of her chicks who has also gone broody and hatched some babies by then!

I don't think most of them would survive simply because of environment. Here where I am, if I didn't feed them in the winter I doubt they would be able to find food.

That being said, if ever something happens and we're thrown back to the stone age, I'm getting myself ready to be able to give the chooks and ducks subsistence over the winter, so they can provide me with subsistence through the year. And that also means breeding for broodiness. I won't keep any animal that can't reproduce on it's own.

Although I must say I am *very* interested in the ancient Egyptian incubators...
Well, of course most of them wouldn't survive...there aren't supposed to be 35 billion chickens on Earth. The amount of biomass chickens (and cows and pigs) constitute relative to other mammals is incredible! Nature would deal with the overload really quickly. Like chickens would probably continue to exist in areas warm enough for them to forage all year, but not elsewhere, as you point out.

And it wouldn't even take going back to stone age conditions. Just the pre-industrial age (like 300 - 400 years ago) would be plenty to reduce bring their populations down to a less absurd number.

I must look up these Egyptian incubators... history is my jam.

My photos have never won anything in these contests either. :p But everyone loves broodies and their babies, we all love to see them regardless of the photo quality, it's just fun to be a part of the contest. All broodies and their babies melt our hearts. 💖

Oh and yes, more babies please!! 🐤🐤🐤🐤
