LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

I... am doing something silly. Again. Bringing in four new ducks. Three females and a male. Looks like a white layer, a Buff, and a Blue Swedish, and the drake is Pekin. Won't be able to keep the drake though.

They're all two years old. Found them in an add online.

Honestly, I don't like the looks of either the Emden (too plain) or the Chinese, although the knob isn't as bad as in the African. I woulda gone for Africans as they are bigger (more meat when they produce young) but the combination of the knob AND the dewlap made me go :sick! Plus, the ganders can be aggressive, even after socializing.

And anything plain white just doesn't do it for me. I'd love to get the American Buff ones, or Pilgrims, but they are not good guardians.

And if you want LOUD, the combination of ducks screaming their heads off for no reason (see any of @WannaBeHillBilly 's videos) and roosters crowing at all hours will give the geese a run for their money.

I should just stick with nice, quiet Muscovy. ;)
The one breed of geese that i like to have - one day, when i have built a Goose-Kaboose is the Cotton-Patch Goose:
A lighter built, quiet goose-breed that was used for weeding the cotton-fields before some greedy business invented RoundUp… ☠

I like the colors I've seen of them.

Too many males? That's a Good Bib on the Swedish, you'll like her and the buff. You'd probably like the male too if he stuck around. I adore my pekin

Yeah. I currently have four drakes to four ducks. Cannot keep that ratio. One of my current drakes I have been intending on culling since the Fall. Just haven't done it yet. And I'd planned on culling one of the two blue drakes, but they are so bonded to each other I don't have the heart to separate them.

My other drake is a purebred Magpie, and he needs to stay.

So... The pekin and my white boy will either end up in the freezer, or at the livestock sale in May. Probably the freezer.

I've got a Buff girl already, and really like her. She's an amazing mom. This'll be my first Swedish. I just hope the White Layer doesn't give me too many issues, like @BelovedBirds 's.

Now to figure out names...

Fair enough on the male's. Sounds like you just need to buy more girls 😉

They are so hard to find!!! When I saw these being offered, I just jumped at them.

And I don't know about getting any more after this, although I wouldn't be surprised if some fresh Muscovy blood finds it's way in, lol! Right now, I have the eight regulars, and 17 Muscovy. Again, too many males in those, too, but I can't bring myself to culling any of them. I may separate them into trios for breeding purposes instead of leaving it to chance like I did last year.

I really wish I had a barn...

There's always the chance she won't! Dougie has scarcely had a bad day, it's mainly just Sprightly. Perhaps it's mostly down to genetics

Hmm, for names here’s a few: willow, millie, lily, buttercup, blossom, cherry, peanut, ginger, magnolia, myrtle, nova, Lacie, sunny. I don’t know if you want to name the male or not since you’re planning on getting rid of him.
