LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

Ah, I see! Thanks for clarifying! The scientific name seems Greek in origin (which is probably a lot of scientific names). Looks like «μόνο (ένα) άνθος», single bloom. I wonder, have you found anything about that? From what I can remember from your photos (back when it was in bloom), there wasn’t a singular bloom from each particular plant.
I also can’t imagine this would be their most defining quality, lithops and faucaria (off the top of my head) also have only one singular bloom per plant.

The only reason I can resist, is because I have only two hands, which limit what I can carry. I also intentionally bring a certain amount of money, so that I don’t go overboard. Also quite helpful is that most expo stuff is incredibly overpriced:rolleyes:.
I can’t complain about the distance, I’m lucky enough to be close enough to the capital.
3+ hours is a lot, but maybe a once in a lifetime expo visit would be worth it! As you mentioned, you live in cactus country, so there should be some REALLY special plants in any expos there.
I’m sure the prices will be horrible, though:rolleyes:
Wonderful info on the word Monanthes, that's interesting it would mean single bloom. Yes if you look closely at this photo, you can clearly see 2 and 3 spent bloom stems coming out of the same plant stem. (Nearly every plant stem had blooms eventually)

Unless they are referring to the actual bloom itself and how it is designed. The flower itself may be one bloom, growing differently from other flowers on plants? :idunno

And yes, having only two hands, not using a shopping basket and not going in with 10 friends will definitely keep you under control. 🤣 But yes I'm sure these plants are way over priced, they know folks are going there to not only look but to purchase too. Why not rip everyone off. But if you see a "gotta have" plant, it's worth it especially if you limit yourself. Now that we are a couple of old fogies and are retired from working, 😂 we are taking some day trips and drives occasionally. Maybe next spring we will head off to the big city and browse the plant stores and shows.

Yeah, not sure. Maybe this is exactly the reason it’s named monanthes, that it has multiple bloom stalks at the same time, but only one flower per bloom stalk? I can’t think of another succulent that does that. But I’m not thinking too hard right now, to be honest.

Maybe some springtime shopping will be just the thing! I’m sure you’ll find some great things, as long as you don’t gravitate towards the opuntia:p! Speaking of, how are yours doing?

That makes sense about the one flower stalks thing. It's actually in the Crassula family, which are a pretty diverse family of plants. This Monanthes polyphylla grows among damp rocks in the shady cliffs on the Canary Islands, definitely different from most other succulents. I'm not sure we will ever figure out these scientific names. :p

The Opuntia, Bunny Ears, that I had ordered on line last year arrived with bugs and a fungal infection. The plant turned mushy only a week later, I hadn't even watered it. :hmm I pulled off two of the best pads to propagate, one never rooted but the other did! But it too had rust and some sort of fungal issue, I worked hard at healing the plant but it continued to get worse. It didn't make it. ⚰️ It's on my list to replace if I ever come across one, I really like these furry little pad plants. 😁

Yeah, I read that while searching it up a bit. It really doesn’t look like a crassula to me!
Didn’t know it came from the canaries, very interesting. Very odd as well.
Such a weird plant.

Sorry to read about the opuntia, you tried your absolute best :hugs . Hope you find one soon, although you know how I feel about those…things

The hypothetical plants have arrived!
Hypothetically, of course.

Two stapelia hirsuta, and one stapelia variegata.
Everything looks great so far, they look healthy, not damaged at all, and (again, so far) pest free
Yay!!! :wee That's was fast! They are in good hands with you, I cant wait to see them, especially those gorgeous flowers in the spring! 😊

Right!?
I thought at least a week!
Very pleased!

I’ll get pictures tomorrow or on Sunday, when I manage to find nice pots for them.

Can’t wait for the blooms!

I am excited to follow along with these, I may have to order a couple for myself! ;) 😁

Can't wait to see photos!
