Good question! I don't know much about chicken genetics but perhaps it's a different gene?
I think it's like how pea and blue are close together. I know pea comb tends to have smaller wattles, bit it's not automatic.

Yeah that makes sense. Sometimes the gene might not affect the wattles at all. Because I've seen some brahma males with some HUGE wattles, so yeah I don't know

I think it's another thing you just have to watch while breeding.
 
So, were those pics of chicks you were considering purchasing?

No, no they're random full grown males that came up on the Web. The brahmas I have photos of have only one fault, and it's that some of the birds have vulture hocks, or at least what seems to be vulture hocks
