LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

Don't worry too much about opening the incubator. Lockdown doesn't mean DON'T TOUCH DON'T EVEN BREATHE NEAR THE UNIT! I constantly open mine and take babies out, or check eggs, etc. I even take out pipped eggs. Think of what happens with a hen. Yes, this is artificial incubation, and we have to do things a bit different, but it's not as strict as what people say. The main thing is no longer turning eggs, although even that is not that much of a big deal.

I was still turning with my OEGB eggs when one morning there was a chick out! Apparently didn't harm it in the least. :) I'd forgotten how tiny eggs can hatch early.

Of course! :hugs

Right now they probably haven't internally pipped yet, definitely no external pips, so yes it's safe to open the lid tonight and early tomorrow morning. Try to be done opening the lid by mid day tomorrow.

Right now I'm done with the egg checks for the day, since it's very late and I'd like to go sleep🤣. 11am-1 pm tomorrow is probably when they'll get set for lockdown. Anyways, I will follow both yalls advice and the advice on the bator, since it has been very successful for people

This first incubation is one big experiment. You will learn over time what you can and can't do, what humidity levels work, if the temps were spot on, etc.....all this learning will come with repeated incubation with your machine. Generally something hatches even if things go totally wrong. :jumpy

Sleep well Fluffy! 😴

We have MAJOR updates! Eggs were placed on lockdown, and we put four new eggs under Cruella (which I had to slide under her). Well, two eggs are externally pipping!
:woot Super egg-citing!
We've encountered our first problem😬. The humidity is at 82%🫠
Has it been fairly stable since last night? If so you might open the lid and wipe some of the moisture off of the lid, thus removing some of the humidity. The humidity should drop pretty quick.

I just filled the outer tray with water 1 hour ago, and this was my first check since then. I don't see any moisture on the lid yet

Ok then it's probably just a spike from adding water, things are probably OK then. When you see humidity raining from the lid, humidity is definitely too high.

Cruella must be getting excited now!

Let's hope it's a spike. Usually after one hour the humidity reading remains the same for quite awhile, so I'll be keeping an eye on it. I think Cruella is more confused than anything🤣. She was constantly checking from under her, and when she settled you could tell she was confused, you could see it in her eyes. That, or I gave her one egg too many and she's uncomfortable. It's the same look
