Okay, dog experts I need your opinions!

I'm hoping to get a dog next year some point, for a few reasons. From supporting my mental health when I'm alone much of the week- to getting me out of the house, and making me feel a little safer. I'll be moving to a completely new area soon and so this is something important to me.

Now, here's the thing, I will be taking my current dog with me- Sadie. My other dog Storm, I have painfully decided to leave with my parents as she and Sadie don't make a perfect pair and I want Sadie to live out her remaining years the best way possible. With lots of toys and treats, which she can't have around Storm because she has issues. Long story. Storm is also not great around my rabbit or ducks, so I'd like to have a pooch who can be desensitised at a young age.

So I need a dog which will both be loyal, protective, good with other dogs.
And an upside is an energetic dog which will enjoy long walks and runs. (I'm experienced with large, difficult to groom, energetic dogs, so I'm not phased by much).

Any ideas?
Also hi all I've not been on this thread for a while.... again

German shepherd! They do vary a lot in temperament and looks between breeders which is something you need to keep in mind

Go to the local shelter and rescue a worthy dog.

I disagree with rescue dogs being the best if you want anything specific, there are no 100% guarantees but you can minimise the chance of failure

with rescue dogs nobody really knows how they will behave specially when they have been kept in a kennel and not fostered. Not to mention large majority have some sort of behaviour issue, that can sometimes only appear after they settle in with you

with a wellbred dog the breeder should know their lines and the dogs they have bred. So they should have a good idea of the temperament and health that their puppies have. If all of their dogs in their line get along with other dogs there is a high chance the puppy if raised correctly will as well

rescuing dogs is great but only for the right people who don’t
have anything really specific in mind and can handle aggression, resource guarding, reactivity and nervousness

getting a rescue that has been fostered rather then kept in a kennel can give you a better idea of how they will behave but still not as well as a wellbred puppy

there are also awful rescues like there are awful breeders

This is true
My current girl is a rescue, and while I always favour adoption (way too many dogs needing homes), I think it's more difficult to do with pre existing pets.

The chances of finding a rescue who is socialised around small animals, other dogs, people, children, is pretty slim. Plus, my old girl may be an angel, but she can be stressed during the first introduction with a new dog. She has been attacked before, and one of those times almost killed her. And even before that, she was never socialised properly.

Several years ago (wow time flies) she was introduced to a malamute puppy, and she was nervous for the first day or two, then came around. It wasn't long at all before she was playing so gently with that puppy, she loved her. And she still does all these years later.
So I believe it would be possible to introduce her to another puppy, the same slow way. But if I go through a rescue, they require the dogs meet at the shelter and if there is any anxiety between the dogs they will not allow them to go with you. I could attempt it and she might hit it off with them, but it's a big chance that won't happen. She needs a slow introduction and then she realises it's not going to hurt her.

So lots of factors to consider. I'm looking into responsible breeders with healthy well loved dogs, this time. Next time it'll be another rescue for sure

I cut it and hope for the best :gig
Never turns out like I'd hope
My hair gal wants pictures if possible so she can match it since I'm crap at telling her what i want. I finally found a picture, and I'm dying of laughter. I had to find the fricking revolution spy show to find the 1 dude in the entire series that has hair close enough to what i want when it comes to the important part.
