Yeah, pain memory is, well, a pain. Horses with a history of ulcers in particular tend to be girthy, because it used to hurt and they’re still expecting it to.
It's so sad that so many horses hate the girth, it must be pretty common for then to have it too tight, be started improperly, or have issues at some point down the line. Most of the horses I've tacked up have been unhappy about the girth, and that's even though I've always done it up slowly, in stages, and never too tight.

One of my girls tries to scratch her belly when we put the girth on to ride. She'll start swaying and rubbing against it

I spent my morning and early afternoon volunteering at a pony stables today :D
I'm just trying to get some experience and practice in. Spent most of the time shovelling poop, and grooming ponies. It was good, but I feel pathetically tired out from it lol.
If it makes you feel better, all I did yesterday was shop with my friend and I was exhausted when I got home that night
