I've never been a plant whisperer, I never know what they need but try to take the best guess I can. In my last order of plants a month ago, one came blessed with mealy bugs, and I just cleared out the scale, thrips and fungus gnats from previous orders along with being outside. Its disheartening to fight these things along with loosing many to nurseries over watering and plants with fungus. I pray these mealies haven't spread to the rest of my plants. I will NEVER order plants on line again!

Thanks Fluffy, I'm trying to stay positive in the midst of struggle. The dust will settle on this eventually and will become a distant memory. I will be careful in the future if I bring in new plants though but I will get the rest of these babies through the bug wars of 2024!

I bet you learned a lot about pest control/eradication through this. Valuable to have for the future. Bug Wars of 2024, a very fitting name

I have! I have always kept a few plants and cacti over the years, and I have NEVER had such issues in my life! Until this year I never even knew what a mealy bug looked like, what the heck was scale, is a fungus gnat a bug or a fungus and I couldn't even pronounce thrip! After all this I have definitely learned more than I care to know about plant bugs! I was in the local nursery yesterday purchasing some Imidacloprid, I want to bring in my Medusa head and various other bigger plants that have spent the summer outside. I am SO nervous to bring them in now! But I think I can clean them up. Anyway, I saw some cute succulents yesterday at the nursery but I was stern with myself, "just NO!" Sad situation.

You have way more experience with pests than me! I've only ever had to deal with mealybugs, and fungus gnats. Scale, when you first said you were dealing with scale I was shocked! From the little I've heard about it, people say the worst!

Maybe saying no to those succulents at your local nursery was a good choice. You'll have next spring to bring in new succulents, after all your current ones are free of pests

I cleaned up the plant as well as I could and I check it constantly with a magnifying glass, its a Rebutia Krainziana, very pretty cactus. I don't think there are any more bugs, larva or eggs on it. But one can never be sure! It has damage, last week I treated it with a systemic bug and antifungal, I hope it survives, you just never know whats going on inside these plants! Scale is brutal, those things are really bad. I haven't seen any signs if scale since the end of June, so I think I got that eradicated! Scale killed a few of my plants, before I knew what was going on.

Yes I am glad I skipped the plants I saw yesterday. And they usually carry a few every late spring into summer. I like to be able to inspect a plant before I purchase it now, so I think this will be where I get my plants from now on. Not a very big selection there but at least I can look at them first instead of ordering in line.

Treating mealybugs on cacti must be much harder, not very easy to get to them behind all those spines. What I did for the mealybugs was drench the plants affected with iodine/alcohol, and repeat a out a week later. If they ever come back, try using that technique, worked very well for me!



Getting plants from a local nursery or a plant expo is a good choice, you'll be able to inspect them. Still, I try to quarantine new plants, just in case

So if any of you US folks have dogs with bad arthritis, ask about the new arthritis shot next time you take them to the vet. It's only been about 5 days since we took Sasha in and she got hers and she visibly feels less stiff and achy.

Not sure either. We don't have any senior or arthritic dogs here currently, but I'll ask next time one of the dogs needs to go to the vet
