LGBTQ+ Poultry Keepers

For enrichment, if he will spend long hours in a cage alone, give him a much space as you can afford. Use bendable rope perches, it's easier on their legs and feet. Mirrors, hang millet stalks, small bells, ladders, basically things to do. Check out the pet parrot section of a local pet shop or other stores and see what they have for birds. If you can allow it, he'd appreciate a play stand out of the cage where he can hang out and feel like he's part of the family. Leave his cage door ajar so he can climb out and play on top of the cage. Most parrots like a thin breathable cage cover at night, it helps keep the light out and they feel protected. They need at least 8 hours of dark uninterrupted sleep.
The temporary cage was meant to be small for now and then if he stays we'd replace it with a huge one, but the one we picked up was pretty huge so he's got heaps of space for now lol, we will put him in something a little better, bigger, longer, if he ends up staying so that he has a lot of space to stretch his wings and have a ton of perches and toys.
Would a thin duvet sheet work for the night layer over the cage? Or does it need to be more breathable? I could get something specific or leave part of the wire open for good ventilation.

No owner found yet, and on day three with him. We have tried everything to find them, but we did have someone reach out last night who said that a bit over 3 weeks ago, someone released/abandoned their budgies on the street outside of a pet store. All because the pet store wouldn't buy them. There was a group of them that flew away and I don't believe they were ever caught. This was local enough, and it's been warm enough here, that he may have been one of them. Not impossible right?

We've decided that if no one comes forward we will open our home to him and get him everything he needs. We've named him Charlie for now. (Although my heart is set on a nickname like Petri for some reason!)
No idea where that thought came from, and then I said it out loud and realised it was the pterodactyl from the cartoon "Land before time". I loved that as a kid :gig

Sounds like you are giving him a wonderful home and should no one come forward to claim him, he is in the best of hands! If the cover you wish to use is a bit thick, then leave it cracked over the front of the cage so air can get in and out. It's not necessary to cover the entire cage really, you are basically trying to darken it and cut out night time drafts. I had a Cockatiel that insisted on leaving the front with a couple inch slit when he was covered. He had night terrors and completely covering him made him panic. At one point I had to add a nightlight near his cage so he could see something beside a dark room. One of my Lovebirds wouldn't quiet down and played with her toys all night unless she was completely covered. So every bird is different, I used cotton cloth as covers.

How is the little guy doing, BelovedBirds?

Hope everyone’s doing good
He's doing fab! We have to get him some proper toys as he's pretty dang bored.
No owners have come forward... he's a very sweet boy and he's much loved by us all already.

On another note, I've done it! I moved ducks and my goldfish up... the journey dragged out for about 7 hours, the goldfish all survived, bit stressed but they're settling really well! Only one of my smaller ones is sitting on bottom of the tank adjusting, and he'll likely be okay tomorrow.

Dougie hated the journey, a lot. Lots of panting/heavy breathing, meanwhile Sprightly had a blast. Tell me why, because I have no clue... she was chatty the whole way, pottering about in the crate, napping and pestering me for food. (I sat beside them feeding them bits of fruit now and then). This certainly improved the journey for Dougie, but she still hated it. We took two decent breaks, allowing them a drink of water, I then sorted myself out and then gave them a second drink before heading off each time. They coped. I got the fish bags open and acclimatising while I went out to put the ducks in their pen, and they were overjoyed, straight to the grass they now have to hunt for bugs, Dougie turned the water bucket into mud grass soup.... and they had a swim in their pool, a very thorough and excitable swim. They're in bed now and it's midnight here so I'm going to sleep too. Been a super busy day.... very stressful but it's done, I'm officially and completely moved. Hopefully Doug and Spry are feeling good in the morning.

Night y'all!

Everyone is feeling well rested and content today! Dougie and Sprightly are enjoying their very good grass, nibbling it, lying in it, and hunting for bugs... and the fish are all well and settled!

So all done...
Charlie (budgie) is having his first planned out of cage time. He was so excited once he was certain he was allowed out of it... zoomies chirps and a few flight laps around the room. He'll get a good amount of time out of his cage and then we'll politely request he go back with a nice treat, perhaps some fruit to try :)

I sort of stopped wanting to have more birds, but this feels kinda right. He's so loved by us. No luck finding his owners still
