Hi,
So I've let a broody Barnevelder hen hatch some chicks, and she abandoned three that had the same markings, and all had these weird mite things on them.
I'm not sure exactly what these mite things are, but they are really tiny, brown and shaped like a miniature flea. There are hundreds of them.
I've encountered these before on eggs, and they're a real nuisance. But I don't know how to get rid of them. 2 of the 3 chicks are really, really weak (I'm hoping just from cold/abandonment because I've put them in with my other, healthy chicks as I only have one brooder box), and one is reasonably okay, but keeps its eyes shut most of the time to keep out the mites.
So, I have two questions:
1) Is it vitally important I separate the ones with mites from my other chicks? and
2) what are these mite things/how can I get rid of them without hurting the chicks?
If it takes a bath to get rid of them, the healthier of the 3 chicks might be fine, but the other two just would not deal.
I'm happy to buy any powders or anything off the internet, but I've heard something about them getting in chicks lungs?
Cheers.
