Just discovered our 3 hens have little white bugs crawling around their vents! I have Permethrin dust I put in their shavings in the coop every week when I change it, is that the stuff I should put directly on the vents to kill the lice/mites?

You can put the dust in a pillow case, put your chicken in the pillow case with its head sticking out the top, gentlly "shake and bake." Then take some dust and put it on your fingers and rub it in on her neck, head...avoiding eyes and nostrils. You'll have to redust them in 10 days. You'll need to do the same thing with their coop and redust everything again in 10 days.

If they are white to beige colored they are lice. Diatomaceous Earth, food grade, is a great way to keep lice down on a regular basis. Once they are on your birds you need to treat the bird. Follow the directions for whatever de-louser you are using. Or go the the thread about lice under the emergency/illness tab. There are dozens of things you can use for lice, some more toxic than others. Treatment needs to done quickly as they can drain a bird of blood fairly rapidly. I washed my birds with Adams flea tick for kittens (a light dose) and rinsed them, and kept them inside at night and then got rid of all the bedding in the coop. You can read about bird bathing techniques under the same section as above.

Thanks, I think I will try the pillowcase with the dust method and see how it goes. Wish me luck!!

Advice on how to give a chicken a bath?? I am reading the reply from luckyclucker and having a visual of myself trying to give these chickens a bath like I would the dog!!! I have to admit I am reluctant to bring them into my house for a bath! Outside?

Thank you Dawg, I checked out the site and it helped. It mentions being careful with food-producing birds and that made me wonder, are the eggs still safe to eat when treating for lice?

Yes. I've been using sevin dust for years and eating eggs...still here typing lol.

Hahaha that's all I need to hear, thanks for all the help! The husband is home now and we are about to venture out and dust some chickens!

We were successful, the pillowcase trick worked well, though the chickens didn't think it was fun! Wondering if that may be why our Rhode Isl. Red isn't laying for the past few weeks? Hmmm...
