My coop is just a little "house" on stilts that the chickens lay eggs in and roost in at night. This chicken house is inside a chain link chicken kennel (okay it was a dog kennel). The problem I'm having is with the light outside the house they can go in and hide from it. So my thought is, since I lock them in at night after they roost why not put the light inside and set it on a timer. I would have it come on at like 4am. Only problem I can see with this is they don't get let out until 8 or 9am and there isn't any room for food or water in their house. Is this going to be a problem or will they be okay until I go let them out? I don't think they will starve but I didn't know if they needed to eat right when the "sun" came out.
