Little duck from the flea market...?

Thank you for the images! She's gonna be one very beautiful duck 😱. I'm not as familiar with this breed as I raised/raise Pekins. I didn't even know they came in chocolate!
I have owned the basic kinds of ducks but i know a little bit about muscovies. they also come in lavender if I'm not mistaken and many many more beautiful colors than that! and yes she is a beautiful duck indeed you got lucky!

Just a quick question unrelated to the wound and other stuff. Anyone have experience with getting a semi feral/frightened duck to trust you? I've always raised ducklings myself so never had this issue.

She's absolutely terrified (understandable!) and peeps/cries/runs into everything when I check on her and handle her. Any advice on getting her used to people?
It just takes time. I used to work with non-releasable birds of prey. They are going to be terrified for a while. Overtime they get use to their new surroundings. Muscovy do tend be a bit standoffish in new surroundings even when they are not abused.

You feed them, take care of them. Show them with time and patience that you will not hurt them. Move slowly around them. Be calm and gentle. The more and more you interact with them, the more they will trust you.

As far as getting her to trust, I would just make sure you approach her at her level and not from above. Hold out your hand with some meal worms. Might have to wait a good long time, but eventually she will learn that you are not going to harm her. Muscovy girls are kind of standoffish unless you've got something they want. :D Mine will come to me for meal worms or if I'm shoveling dirt (they stand around to see what treats they will find). They also don't mind if I pick them up briefly. For part of this spring 2 of my girls decided they were sleeping in the chicken coop and would stand by so that I could pick them up and put them in (if they didn't get in there before the auto door closed). They quit doing that now and have decided to sleep in the duck house again. They are quick learners, so I bet she will figure out super quick that you are there to help.
If a boy, they are much more entertaining and usually will come see what you are up to. My one drake follows me around and is sometimes very annoying, but has lots of personality.

Thank you both 😊. Everyone here is so encouraging. Always love posting because I know everyone will be so kind and have tons of info!

I really hope she heals up well and I can make friends with her. ❤️

In my opinion with ducks the best way is to hand-feed mealworms

Hey all. Was at the local flea market this morning and a guy there had a bunch of injured animals 😞. This little one had a big hole in his back so I got him just to get him healed up.

Can anyone tell me anything about this duck? Breed/sex/anything? I'm thinking Muscovy but the colors seem wrong. I'm already in the process of getting the wounds cleaned up. Thanks in advance!
Aww poor little guy

I have no idea what the gender is but it looks like a Muscovy

Vet update!

The exotics vet said the wound was pretty bad, but I did a good job cleaning it. It's already started granulating so she didn't want to close it up. She prescribed antibiotics (SMZ Suspension) & Metacam twice a day. I have to keep cleaning with chlorhexidine too. She also got a fecal done and will be getting dewormed tomorrow.

She said no swimming for a few weeks (due to the gland being injured) but she can have a little playtime in the bathtub. She'll also be bald for a bit until the feathers come back in.

All in all, everything else health wise is perfect and she's a good weight. The vet did also say she will be this size permanently. She said she looks like a mutt (not full Muscovy) so will be very small. I've also dubbed her Hershey.

Hopefully it's all healing from here! ❤️

That is such a good report. Did she think she'd be able to use the oil gland once healed? That bill is pure Muscovy. And she has a precious face.
Yes, she said once everything heals she should be good to go. The gland is still making oil, but since the whole area is open and wounded right now she can't properly use it (since they normally rub/spread it around). 😁
