My black silkie, Patricia, was on my lap. She loves it when I stroke the back of her neck. She's so small I only have to use a finger.
 
Does anyone think it's wrong to put rescued battery hens in a medium sized pen? It's better than a tiny cage, but I don't know if people would think I'm mean for not letting them free range.

I would say definitely, the medium pen. Because the large space of outdoors would be too scary at first. To that chicken, tight space is what it knows, which is a form of security for it. If that makes any sense. IMO.
