please don't beat yourself up over this. we all get very anxious on our first hatch. what is done is done and I think you are giving it the best chance you can. if anything you have an amazing photo that is very educational. I hope your chickie makes it, if it doesn't though please don't blame yourself just use this as a way to learn from it.

Sorry, didn't mean to sound harsh. I was in a hurry to type. I think you are doing all you can for now. Make sure you are misting with warm water, and keep him, wrapped

I hope the little guy makes it.

That is ok - I prolly overreacted. I just feel absolutely terrible that I did this.

He seems just fine. Breathing normally, chirping sometimes... I am keeping my distance except to occasionally mist him. This is so hard... I just feel like there is something I should be doing. I know that is not the case... but having two kiddos has ingrained in me a sense of duty to protect those that are mine. Such as this little chick.

Is there ANYTHING I can do?

The yolk looks completely unchanged. I do not think he has absorbed any of it. Will he die if he does not absorb it? It contains his internal organs, right?

Right, keeping the membrane moist is the key, but if you attempt it use 100 degree warm water, or it will be chilled, one more factor added to the chick doom.

I think you need to stop opening it to mist him, just wrap him in a wet towel or cloth, that should stay wet if the humidity is up. The more you open it and the temp /humidity keeps changing the more chance I think he is going to not make it. That misting has to be a shock to his system as it's not normal and every time you do it, he probably isnt resting like he needs to. Just my opinion , I know it's hard but just let him be wrapped up and resting .
It there are other eggs , all that opening , and misting will surely affect them. Also since you've opened it so much, you might as well take the hatched chick out and put it in the brooder.

Good luck, get some rest, the best thing you can do now is let him do his own thing.

Thanks, Nancy. The other chick is out and in the brooder. It was just the two of them. The humidity has been staying above 80, so I am not going to do any more misting for the night. I doubt I will sleep much, though. I wish I could find the answers to my yolk questions, though.
