Living life on the edge (of the incubator) hatch-a-long

Brr! Stay warm! We had a cold snap 2 weeks ago, last week went from freezing to 74 deg F, this week is moderate for winter but we're getting cold again later this week with more snow in the forecast.

We're supposed to return to 20°C by the end of the week, but I don't know if I can make it until then. When it comes to cold weather I'm a total crybaby🤣

Define warm. Today we had the coldest day of the year so far, average day temperature of 4°C, and very windy. Going out in that cold today felt like crap. It'll drop to 2°C this week during the night for sure. Although geese interest me more than ducks right now, but I still love chickens way more than the others
As long as it's warm enough to run a hose outside to fill up their buckets - that's good enough.
Even easier!

Wow, how have I gone so long without them!

They had duckies on sale at TSC for $1 last year, I don't remember the breed, but it was sure tempting to get them!

Well now, if you, TwoCrows, and ElfenLied89 help take some of these 96 eggies and the 6 Wilkies out of my coop, maybe I'll have space for ducks!

(Wilkies are white silkies, so named in the last hatch-a-long 🤣)
Maybe. No promises. :lau

Fluffy, this must send shivers right up your spine. 🤣

It does. This is exactly how I felt about going out in the 4°C weather. I don't know how some of you go outside when it's below 0°C (30 something degrees F), you guys deserve prises. I don't want to even Google how much 0°F is in Fahrenheit, and I've seen it be thrown around!

We have heated water buckets for the horse and heated water bases for the chickens, I'm sure I could find some sort of a heated swimming solution too! At least big enough for a nice ducky dip.

Ooh, one of those shallow metal water troughs with a stock tank deicer in it!

Yeah, we had 0F here with windchill to -20degF two weeks ago. I cover up everything but my eyes, and sometimes I'll wear safety glasses to keep the wind off them too. Your breath goes up and freezes on your eyelashes. The moisture from your breath will also freeze in your scarf. I had a heated jacket over my insulated overalls 🤣 made it! Other areas in the US had it way colder and for longer, so I'm not going to complain 🥶

I think that means I'm in the clear. I don't remember ever having this problem
:lau Yep. I have to drain the hose every September and haul water until April or May. Any earlier would result in split pipes.

I recall one year we had a week where the warmest it got during the day was -17*C.

Over a decade ago a Polar Vortex came down the Rockies and sat on us for 3 days. -30F (-35C) for 3 straight days. Trees died, birds, rabbits, all sorts of wild creatures not accustomed to this kind of cold parished. I had 5 heat lamps, panel and oil heaters in the chicken coops and quail aviaries. I didn't lose any birds but holy crow, I couldn't be outside more than 5 mins at a time. Just brutal!

That’s pretty bad. We’ve gotten -40 a few times at night but never for more than a day or two. :th
