I can always tell when I'm stressed because my TMJ gets worse from grinding my teeth in my sleep. I've had it for years. My chiropractor heard my jaw popping one day when I was getting my back adjusted and offered to fix it for me, and can I say WOW. Not all chiropractors adjust jaws, so you may have to ask around.
An adjustment lasts about a year or so. As soon as it's adjusted your jaw stops popping and hurting. I'm not one of those die-hard, go to the chiropractor once a month people, but I do go every year or so and it does make a big difference. I would not have surgery on my jaw - I've known too many people that didn't have good experiences with it.
