My hen has a long, sharp spur. She doesn't run because of it. How do I trim it? I have attached a photo below. This is not urgent so i didn't put in the emergency forum.

Hens do not grow spurs like that, it looks like a roo.
You can use SHARP large dog nail clippers to trim off a tiny bit off the tip; after a week the tender quick (part inside the spur) will recede and you can clip some more. Good luck!

You can file it down the long slow way, or you can use dog nail cutters, or a hack saw and a little septic pen/corn starch to stop the little bit of bleeding. Some people have even used a hot potato and pliers (Google it).
Good luck!

I have several game hens with spurs 2" long and sharper than most my rooster's spurs.

Thanks, I will try. Yes, it is a hen and she has laid eggs in the past. She just happens to be a hen with a spur like that. She is six. We currently have three old ladies.

Yea I saw the potato. My avian vet would cringe. I have parrots and she also does chickens and saved another chicken's life last year when she had Egg Yolk Peritonitis.

Wow, I didn’t even know hens could grow spurs! Guess ya learn something new everyday lol. What breed of chicken is she?
