I have always longed to live WAY out in the country, with lots of animals, and no neighbours. But when we moved to Oregon we were both in our fifties, and it just didn't seem like a good idea to be too far away from things like health care. A friend of mine, who is also an MD, agreed that that decision was probably a good one; after many years of working in the E.R. her opinion is that if one were to have a stroke or heart attack it is best to either be within 15 minutes of a hospital (for a probable good result), or more than an hour away (for a quick end) - in between, and modern medicine could probably save one's life, but not necessarily one's quality of life. I'm not trying to be negative, or morbid, just realistic. Depending on your age, health history, and intentions about length of time you want to remain on your new property (the rest of your life, or just a few years) the question of health care is an important one. As we all know, health issues can crop up at any time of life, and not just when we are old. Just this last year, at age 58, my DH has undergone treatment for 3 different cancers.
That said, may I also add a big Congratulations for having received the abilitiy to make choices now that many people either never get, or have to work many decades for. Personally I think having those choices is the greatest part of your father's legacy.
