Looking for CSA Info for Next Year

My thought, too. That's a lot of chickens.

I would offer two packages: 1 chicken per week and 2 chickens per week. Plus the Thanksgiving turkey. Give a price for the rabbit and let them order if they want it.

People who can afford a CSA are going to be eating a lot more things besides chicken. There are 2 in my family and we wouldn't be able to finish 20 chickens in a month, even if we ate chicken every day for both lunch and dinner.

And on the turkey, since it is once a year, I would look into it about charging extra for it that month and not charge extra for it every month of the year. I don't really know how a CSA customer would feel about it.

we are at the end of our second year as a meat csa. we offer 3 batches of 6 birds for 115.00. this is up from last year, 110.00.we offer singles at 7.50 each. turkeys are 3.50 lb. and yes we ask for a deposit on the single chickens and turkey. so far everyone has been happy with this arrangement .

That 20 - 24 chickens is equal to 1 chicken per week or 4 a month plus a turkey.

Sorry I should have clarified that a little better.

$450 would include a total of 20 - 24 chickens and a Thanksgiving Turkey that is from late June - Thanksgiving.

Same holds true for the half share. 2 chickens per month and a Turkey for Thanksgiving

LOL! Okay...I was reading it as 20 chickens IN one month! Got it! I was thinking "Who eats 20 chickens each month? The Dugger family maybe!"

Oh...so you mean like ONE a WEEK for a TOTAL of 20...gotcha!

I am glad to hear it is a well established CSA. Sounds like you would be covering your expenses well with the pricing. Do you plan to start small, with maybe 10-20 shares the first time to see how you like being a part of the CSA as well? I also think offering a small amount of shares can make getting a share more desirable. People want to hurry up & buy a share so they dont' get left out.

Out of curiousity, does anyone want to process their own live chickens? Meaning, rather than purchasing a processed broiler, are there some folks that would want to buy the live bird and process it themselves? If so, how would that pricing work? btw, I agree that yes, $20 (+-) is the proper price per chicken.

If the request came to for people to process chickens we would do it on special occasions. In WI if you sell at farmers markets you have to have all meat processed a state inspected facility. So we just take everything in to be processed. It is too much of a paperwork and keeping track nightmare to know what was processed where and what you can take to market or not.

Turkeys we do all on farm except 25 to 50 and than I can handel. But about 1/3 of the turkeys every year the processor smokes breast meat and vac packs and we converted to ground turkey.
