Hello everyone,

I just found out from someone here in Maui, that people on the Mainland have Nene as pets. I read about a few people on the forums that have some. Can anyone point me to a farm where I can buy eggs? I believe that now is the nesting season, and I would like to bring some back to my ornithology professor who really wants to study them. It would make a great independent study project for me. I would also like to try to acquire some Koloa, and Laysan duck eggs if it is possible to get them here, but the Nene is what we are really looking for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I was thinking of contacting one of the universities here, but I figured everything was still closed for the winter, and no one would want to be bugged.

I would also like to buy feathers if anyone knows where I can get some that would also be great.

Thank you!

Moardie, I'm afraid you are getting into something only wildlife biologists w/ credentials should be doing. Transporting flora and fauna between Hawai'i and the mainland has resulted in much biological catastrophe over the last 3-4 centuries. Think about it--a Nene from the mainland could have internal pathogens that end up wiping out the native Nenes. This endeavor is not advisable and could be disastrous!

We do not have to bring them between Hawaii and the Mainland. My professor found a breeder here that can sell us a mating pair.
