Hi, we are currently in the planning phase in raising chickens for the first time.
We are going to start with 6 chickens...3 layers and 3 meat.

We would like some recommendations on what kinds to get as a beginner.

I am currently reading Backyard Farming: Raising Chickens by: Kim Pezza from my google play books library.
If you have any other good reads or reference guides, we'd appreciate it.

The hardest part right now is deciding on how to build the proper coop that will allow the chickens to survive through the midwest winter months. I really love the concept of this one: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/the-chicken-garden-coop.47760/

Then there is the next question on chicken health...where to begin. Is there a good and easy start routine reccomendations?

Alright, well I think that is a good start. I'm excited to be part of this community and looking to learn as well as give advice for the things we learn along the way.

Welcome to BYC!
This place is an amazing resource to learn practically anything about chickens(and some other things) plus it's a great place to ask questions and ask for help.
My #1 suggestion to you is to not get carried away... or else you'll end up like the rest of us:lau
