I have shown that to my DH and we are definitely going to make one of those. Perhaps not in time for this batch of chicks, but I really love the idea.

I'm not saying don't try a brooder plate, but test it out first and watch how the chicks respond to it when you set it up. Other people have had great success with it. I went back to a heat lamp for now, and when the chicks are a few weeks old I will switch to the Sweeter Heater, which uses infrared heat. The one I bought is too big for my brooder, so I can't get it close enough to the chicks right now. I'll use it when I can move them to the larger brooder.

It sounds like you got a poorly constructed model or defective plate.

I am a humble 2 to 3 chicken at a time kinda gal.I restarted having chickens after a few year break. My original gals were free range during the day and cooped at night. We sadly lost a few to hawks. This time out ,I wanted a larger cage, 12 x 4 with enclosed coop/ladder for them to roam around in comfortably .I let them out each evening while I am home and weekends when I'm home. This is working great, they are safe and happy.

Hope you have the cancer beat, get some non-prescription therapy soon! You already have some good suggestions and links, check out the learning center and take some time to look at different coop ideas. Good part is you don’t have to deal with our Wisconsin winters :thumbsup I have a mixed flock, cannot decide on a breed.... here are some of the girls dancing on the table
