LOS ANGELES county CA under bird quarantine :(

Here is another voice from the zone. Regardless of how ppl feel about the mandatory euth zones, or even about Kerri Hand, this person has several points about how the WAY they've been doing it is unnecessary regardless of how we feel on the above. Her points have been substantiated on the live videos.

We've been waiting for the CDFA representatives to come and slaughter my girls. On 5/14 I received notice that we are under quarantine and they would be back on or before 5/24 at 6pm. They have yet to come back. It's both a blessing and a curse. I'm beyond thrilled that the girls haven't been inhumanely killed at the hands of these careless compassion-lacking temp workers. However, I'm thrilled that I still have them. The anxiety of waiting for your home to be raided is overwhelming. I have been in a depression knowing not only am I going to lose my girls, but it's going to be at the hands of untrained killers. I know my girls are going to suffer with pain and fear.

The CDFA stated that the individuals doing the humane euthanasia were wildlife biologists that would practice biosecurity measures. Nothing could be further from the truth. A worker spoke to a resident and told them they got two days training. In those two days I guess they taught them how to use a rifle, air soft guns, gas to kill the birds, sanitation/disinfection, and biosecurity protocol.

Allow me to tell you the truth:
• Riverside county sheriff's and local police have been advised not to respond to ANY calls regarding the issue.
• CHP out of San Bernardino has been contracted by CDFA/USDA to provide security - against the residents and community members.
• Not one person who has had their birds killed has seen a positive test in Southern California. Most backyard birds killed haven't even been tested.
• The concerned bird owners cannot get return calls or emails from CDFA, local and state government officials, or Chad Bianco our Riverside County Sheriff.
• Biosecurity measures are NOT being taken.
• The birds are not being humanely euthanized. Some are being tortured by being shot (but not killed), breaking their necks, standing & bouncing on the neck, & even gassed to the point of sleeping only to wake up in plastic bags and left to suffocate.
• Homeowner's are not allowed to have a neighbor present to support them or translate for them. They are forcing non English speaking & elderly people to sign legal documents that they can not read or do not understand. As of today, June 15,2019 the homeowners were told that they may have a support person with them, however if they choose to have it they will NOT be paid the indemnity.
• No one from USDA, CDFA, CHP or any other person at the kill will provide ID. In essence properties are being raided, homeowners are being sequestered from supporters, & we've seen sudden theft activities on property owned by the most active supporters of the SOB save our birds fb group. They can't even file a police report because no one will respond to take one.
• The birds are being disposed of at local dumps. Bags are ripped open & wild animals are eating the dead birds. In previous outbreaks they buried the birds 6' under. In actuality the birds should be hauled by a person licensed to haul dead animals and go to a rendering facility.

The laws that are being broken by different entities are numerous. Unfortunately, no one seems to be held accountable ...
I was just looking at this on SOB and thinking that this is a good encapsulation of how people in the scal kill zones are feeling currently.

Not exactly an answer to your demand, but it does show that chickens can become immune to vND. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/06/190614111923.htm

From the article. This is exactly what I've been saying. The poultry industry prioritizing productivity over immunity is responsible for this mess.

...evolutionarily, there's something innate that has enabled [backyard chickens] to survive in this environment where the disease is endemic," said Kapur. "Yet, birds that are bred for high productivity as is the case in high-income countries -- they put on weight very quickly, produce a lot of eggs -- their survival in the presence of infectious diseases was not selected for because there is usually a tradeoff between increased resistance to disease and egg or meat production.

I'm starting wonder at what the sources are for some of the things being reported. In particular, I find it hard to believe that the CDFA is preventing people from having a neighbor or friend present when their chickens are being killed. How can they possibly enforce that? I'm all for bringing things to light, but I'm starting to question some of these claims.
I have been thinking the same thing, but I admit I don’t watch any sob videos cause I get more depressed about CA govt than I already am.
Hopefully by documenting some of this stuff it will bring things to light, but the whole way this is all being handled seems to change day by day.
CDFA Contracting with the CHP to protect them? Arbitrary rules around getting paid for your pets? If you have someone there with you you don’t get paid??? I just don’t understand how this is all getting made up and enforced.

I hope my friend in the USDA will be back or is back from her deployment. :fl I want to ask her questions about what is happening and hopefully she can clear things up for us. I texted her today, but haven’t received a response yet.
Any questions that you guys would like me to ask her in particular?

Thanks so much, @Brahma Chicken5000
I’d like to know:
A) when the USDA reports new cases, what avenues are they testing birds from? Is it only people or vets sending birds in for necropsy? Testing as a result of People calling the sick bird hotline? What proactive testing are they doing in the field?
B) somewhat related to A above, what is the plan going forward? How do they know or find out about new cases? Once the current depopulation is done, what’s next? When will they be done with the current depopulation plan? I know it seems like there is an obvious answer, but I’m currently confused, because in the kill zones they seem to be testing no birds.
C) the current depopulation effort, how current are the vnd cases they are reacting to? Seems like for instance some of the mandatory kill zones they are currently depopulating were listed six months ago.

Posting a link from the Merck manual concerning disease origins, use of vaccinations for control, etc. The problem is that this disease is not just one disease. Like the flu, also a virus, it morphs into different strains, and vaccinations would have to be constant to protect against it in any meaningful way. That being said, that is what they do in Asian countries where this disease had it's origin (Java, Indonesia), though the name Newcastles is from England from when it first came there. Also, I just have to say that it is easy for people in other unaffected states to criticize Kerri, call her hysterical, paranoid, and everything else, but none of us have had to walk in her shoes... And she has made a difference in how things are done here. The fact of the matter is, it's pretty scary to take on City Hall, or in this case, the state of California and she has been successful in making a difference in how the birds are treated here. She may well be frightened by her own success and the aggressive backlash that she has received. I know I would be. As I have said before, they waited too long to address this issue. There should have been a quarantine from the first case. Instead they did little to nothing and applied for funding. After they received it, they sent temp workers with little to no training (2 days) out to do a job that most people just wouldn't ever take. To me, that means these people are either sadists or desperate for employment or both. Their behavior when dealing with the public has been horrible and they do not appear to take biohazard precautions at all seriously, which means that all the killing they do will have accomplished nothing. As I have said before, the whole thing is a botch job, and I am not surprised that the disease continues to spread. The input here from others thinking that "we should just leave them alone to do their job and stop the spread" is total wishful thinking. I no longer believe that that is even the primary goal. More likely, it is spending all that grant money, hoping for more, and making your temp employees permanent. https://www.merckvetmanual.com/poul...virus-infections/newcastle-disease-in-poultry Meanwhile, the Ebola Virus has spread into Uganda. That is the human disease equivalent of Newcastles in birds. Let us hope that they do a better job over there and that doesn't become endemic all over the world as Newcastle's disease has. And if it comes here, we will hope someone more competent than Annette Jones is put in charge of "eradicating it".
