You might not have to. The part about bleach is after you’ve killed the bird then you bleach and double bag- anyway I’d just keep them safe- a friend had all indoor brooding birds and they didn’t take them. They left them in her garage - don’t worry about that now maybe they will never get to you

Do you think I should keep them locked in their coop until it’s over or they do visit me lol? They free range in our yard only.

I’m going to call later today after I tell my daughter. She’s only 4 and I want her to be able to say goodbye. I honestly haven’t heard any of the neighbors needing to get rid of their chickens so it’s just shocking to wake up to being in a euthanasia zone. Sorry for my rambling this is just so hard to comprehend

The web site information is unclear as to the extent of the mandatory euthanasia zones as it specifies "some neighborhoods within or near" the cities listed out. I wouldn't put any birds down until it was certain that your exact block/neighborhood is affected. The FAQ section states:

"All birds that test positive for vND are euthanized. There is no cure. If a flock is too close to a positive flock, (next door, sharing a fence line, within the same block or blocks, etc.), it is possible that although birds test negative for vND, they may be euthanized because they have been exposed to the virus. Unfortunately, this is the only way to stop the spread of the disease. In areas where significant numbers of positive cases have been found, birds on entire blocks, or within sections of neighborhoods, may be euthanized to control the spread of disease."

I don't want to hold out false hope, but depending on what's happening immediately around you, maybe your birds will be spared. Also, if they are still young, I might bring them back inside, or at least put them someplace where wild birds can't interact them, until this sorts itself out.

So I reread the page for probably the 20th time today and it does say this “ USDA/CDFA staff will contact affected bird owners with orders specific to their property” so I should receive something if I’m in the zone for euthanasia

I’m only in quarantine area but I have covered runs so I won’t have any issues w their excercise. I think you should treat your birds as you would your child w some contagious issue. Keep things clean don’t let other bird people near yours and do the best you can to keep them happy and healthy

Yes definitely wouldn’t hesitate to contact them immediately if they showed any signs of the disease.

The problem is on how easy the disease is spread
"Virulent Newcastle disease spreads when healthy birds come in direct contact with bodily fluids from sick birds. The disease affects almost all birds and poultry, even vaccinated poultry. The virus can travel on manure, egg flats, crates, other farming materials or equipment, and people who have picked up the virus on their clothing, shoes, or hands." - from USDA website
With that statement the concen for me is I go to feed stores where other chicken owners get supplies so you can possibly get it from them. I get live mealworms in Comptom. Correction USED to get them. They found vND in Compton so I will not be going there anymore. Luckily I have separate chicken shoes which I only wear to their area. BUT the USDA states it can get on cloths too. I heard that a few cities over from where I live (which is about 20 minutes), there are underground cock fighting rings..... so my alarm bells are going off.
