LOS ANGELES county CA under bird quarantine :(

Totally agree @Aunt Angus.
Hopefully the more aggressive approach will take care of this and you will all come out safe on the other side.
Hugs from Northern California.
What a nightmare. I'm so angry and sad that this is happening. Irresponsible people caused the damage, and you an add your families are bearing the heaviest of burdens.

I hope they can deal with this quickly so you don't have to be stuck waiting and worrying. I am so sorry you all are dealing with this.

Thank you for everyone's positive energy and thought. I want the spread to stop so more people aren't affected.

And an open letter to the person who brought vND to us (even though you won't read this) - What the hell is wrong with you? Thanks to your selfishness you brought this on. I have a lot of bad thoughts about you and have caused more suffering to us than anyone should have to go through.

I am way over here in Colorado but given the seriousness of this am increasing my security measures.

Shoes will be sprayed with Lysol and left in the car for feed store trips. Yup special shoes for feed stores.
Actually for EVERY store since bird keepers need other things too. :hmm

Special shoes for coop and run only also Lysol sprayed and kept in my little workshop.

:barnie I am worried about migrating birds too.

I to carry a can of Lysol in my car at all times.

The problem is on how easy the disease is spread
"Virulent Newcastle disease spreads when healthy birds come in direct contact with bodily fluids from sick birds. The disease affects almost all birds and poultry, even vaccinated poultry. The virus can travel on manure, egg flats, crates, other farming materials or equipment, and people who have picked up the virus on their clothing, shoes, or hands." - from USDA website
With that statement the concen for me is I go to feed stores where other chicken owners get supplies so you can possibly get it from them. I get live mealworms in Comptom. Correction USED to get them. They found vND in Compton so I will not be going there anymore. Luckily I have separate chicken shoes which I only wear to their area. BUT the USDA states it can get on cloths too. I heard that a few cities over from where I live (which is about 20 minutes), there are underground cock fighting rings..... so my alarm bells are going off.

Ok so the worrywart part of me is on overdrive. Sorry for the rambling..... after all I may just get lucky and it passes by without hitting me :fl
I sure hope so

I've got Lysol and Clorox wipes in mine! And I'm not a germophobe, either. But chicken poop is gross.

Me, too. My birds free range, so I can't keep all wild birds away. And since I leave their run open during the day, birds get in there sometimes, too. I have been looking at ways to keep them out, though, like the dog door I have in my screen door. It's made of screen material, so it lets in air and light, but it's fine enough to keep out bugs (and birds). The dog just pushes it open with her nose. I am thinking I could train chickens to do the same.

I'm in Los Angeles County and I've been waiting for this.

I don't think it's all that big a deal for backyard keepers who keep good practices. Where I am it's just smart to keep your birds enclosed in a run. I do.

I get my chicks from My Pet Chicken. I don't show them or transport them. They don't come into contact with other birds. I wouldn't adopt anyone else's birds. ...not even free ones ...not even chickens who will be put down if they don't find a new home.

I'll be alert but I'm not afraid for the safety of my flock.
