LOS ANGELES county CA under bird quarantine :(

Pics
Ok so I just called the governors office. Go the route where you want to talk to a governor's staff or representative. I was on hold for maybe 15 minutes. Then some guy answered. He was kind of curt, could tell he takes these calls all day. Wanted to know how he could help me.
I said:
  • I want to lodge my concern about something and make sure its on the governors radar
  • the governor appoints the Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture and its a cabinet level position
  • Theres a VND outbreak going on in SCAL, its been going on for nearly a year and the CDFA and USDA are not close to containing it.
  • Now in fact is has spread to NCAL and I am in NCAL
  • How it affects me as a citizen is Backyard chicken flocks that are pets are being euthanized as part of the current plan
  • I think there needs to be a better plan that takes more into account the needs of backyard chicken flocks that are contained, do not move and are pets.
He listened and said he would pass it on to the governor. He had no information about whether this VND outbreak is on the governors radar or what the governors plan was...he was just lodging my concern. I suppose if a LOT of people call it would make a difference. Im going to call both state senators and both state representatives also and say the same thing.

Factsheets too:

Ok. I did see something last night that sounded like it affects all or most birds, so I assumed they could carry and transmit it. I’ll try to find it. It was linked from another site.

As a scientist, you will enjoy this recent US study.

Note: "These findings indicate that viral transmission may occur between wild birds and poultry, but virulent strains are likely not reservoired by the majority of wild birds, with pigeons, doves, and double-crested cormorants being the exception."

Sorry about the pigeons, if things get bad, maybe you can get them to move on. Don't shoot them with airsoft or lead pellets, your chickens will eat the pellets. Ask me how I know this.

I would reverse that and ask those that THINK wild birds are spreading this outbreak to divulge their sources! Rational thought would be that the state and feds would have already figured that out and not be euthanizing backyard chicken flocks. They'd be trying to get rid of wild birds or telling all chicken owners to enclose their pens so wild birds cant get in.

Hopefully I’m assuming too much here...

From all that I've read (and that's all I've done for hours...), it seems as though wild birds carry it, but it presents with fewer symptoms and with less severity. They can shed it through droppings, feather, and dander to poultry. The poultry, however, die from it. And vaccines seem to have caused additional mutations that effect kept poultry/birds because they are the animals who get vaccinated. In other words, bad ju ju.

This is a great article. Thank you. I will read it in its entirety later.
